Buying Mcdonalds coffee or Starbucks coffee
73Buying McDonalds coffee or Starbucks coffee is an easy choice for me: I like McDonalds coffee better. The taste of McDonald’s coffee doesn’t have the burned taste that Starbucks coffee leaves in my mouth. McDonalds is winning a customer over in me since I am a person who refused to ever set foot inside McDonalds previously.
I saw McDonalds gain awareness – or mind share as marketers say – with my wife when we were driving through Pasadena. She saw a large billboard showing a picture of McDonalds mocha coffee filled with whipped cream and chocolate syrup across the top. She said it looked good even though she doesn’t like a chocolate taste in her coffee. Her favorite flavor previously was Starbucks which has a Raspberry Chocolate blend that she liked but they had discontinued that flavor.
In Los Angeles, I was visiting a printing company that had the account for producing a building-size graphic showing people climbing up the side of a building toward a cup of McDonald’s mocha. Is the advertising for McDonald’s paying off? If so, it’s not just the advertising but also the taste that’s attracting coffee drinkers.
In March 2007, Consumer Reports did a taste test that included McDonalds, Burger King, Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks. This was their conclusion:
Starbucks is still clearly number one but McDonald’s is gaining ground in the battle for coffee supremacy. A graphic from BIGresearch on chainleader.com shows how McDonald’s has steadily gained ground since May 2007.
At that time, 9.8% of coffee drinkers bought from Starbucks while 4.8% bought from Dunkin’ Donuts and 3.3% purchased from McDonalds. But in May 2009, 9.2% surveyed bought from Starbucks while 5.4% bought from McDonalds and 4.1% purchased coffee from Dunkin’ Donuts. Last year, when I told my brother-in-law who is an avid, loyal Starbucks customer that I liked McDonald’s coffee much more than Starbucks I watched him become visibly upset. He retorted that McDonalds should compete head-to-head with Starbucks with a coffee that tastes similar. To me, his logic didn’t make sense but I let the argument drop. So although McDonald’s is making a steady gain in market share, Starbucks is fortunate to have a strong following of brand loyal consumers. As for me, while I prefer McDonalds over Starbucks, my favorite coffee comes a little doughnut shop about one mile away from me. A large coffee is $ 1.35 and I like the taste. What brand is it? I have no idea. All I know, is I like it and ultimately it’s the taste of coffee that counts and not the brand.

Hello,
In my small town in Oregon, the coffee of choice is Dutch Brothers. Never heard of them before I moved here from Los Angeles. I swear there is a drive-thru Dutch Brothers coffee hut on every corner. They've been tearing out the old gas stations and they've put in Dutch Brothers everywhere. The town has decals fo them all over their cars, the teenagers hang out at the two Dutch Brothers coffee stores. They are always packed day and night. I'm in a town of 30,000 spread out over 25 miles in all directions. "In town" from memory, I can count 7 DB coffee huts along with the 2 stores. Their coffee tastes terrible. I think it's the same as Starbucks. People get accustomed to the name and the status of going there. It's not really about the coffee. I, myself, drink instant. Make a pot at home and am good to go. In summer, make instant coffee, sugar and milk over ice Tastes like a coffee milkshake. You get the caffine boost but you're drinking something cold. If you're dieting use sweetener and skim milk. So good! Thanks for a great article. I was wondering if people were drinking McDonalds or Starbucks. In fact. One of the DB coffee huts is less than 50 feet -- in the same parking lot -- as the drive-thru at McDonald's. Come to think of it, I never see anyone at that DB hut. They're driving through McDonald's. There you have it. ;o)
You may not like the coffee but give them credit for building a strong brand. I'll have to read up on them. Are they popular throughout Oregon?
Hi Don,
Thanks for responding. I just found another little tidbit of info on Dutch Bros. I going to rewrite it, otherwise I'll be accused of copying someone else's work.Â
One man was traveling and he said he notices differences in travel. One of the differnces he noticed was there's an awful lot of drive-thru coffee huts in his area. There is literally one on every corner. He says DB is one of the best of them.  I was right. Good guess. There are 10 of them here in GP (and we only have 3 McDonald's.  He says there are nearly 40 of them (mostly franchises) throughout Western Oregon and Northern California. So there you have it. I guess only in our area. I never heard of them either. But every time we get a vacant corner somewhere, or they tear down another gas station, there's another DB going up. They're everywhere. And they're always at least 3 people in line, always. Doesn't matter what time of day. Also, whenever they open a new one. They have the local DJ come there and set up shop in the parking lot and broadcast from there and they give out free coffee all day long to celebrate a new one opening. Lines go around the parking lot for a free cup of coffee. So yes, I guess you're right. Good marketing! ;o)
Oh, forgot to add. My niece's brother-in-law owns a DB franchise up in Washington. He makes over $200,000 a year and he's opening a second "store." Go figure. So they must be doing something right.
Wordslady, thanks for the follow-up. I'll make a mention on my blog Free Marketing Tips and link to your profile on Hubpages. Let me know when you write it . . . otherwise, for your blog I think your comments will suffice.
I also have a second blog, Cash Flow Tips for Companies, and I think it would make a good story there as well.
I look forward to it.
