Buying a digital camera can be intimidating. There are so many choices! If you're not a photography buff or particularly technology savvy, all the bells and whistles that come with most digital cameras can be confusing. I've been looking at simple digital cameras to replace my current camera and have found a few that I really like.

In this article I'll recommend a couple of simple digital cameras I've found in my research. I looked for models that are small and sleek, that are simple to use and produce excellent pictures on the automatic setting, and -- most importantly -- that don't cost an arm and a leg! I checked out online reviews and Consumer Reports magazine to find a good combination of features, reliability, and price.

Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS Elph

The first digital camera I recommend is the Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS Elph. This one was recommended in a recent round-up of digital cameras in Consumer Reports magazine, and it also has very good reviews from both professional sources and customers. You can find it for under $200 if you shop around.

Canon manufactures good quality cameras and this one is no exception. It is one of the most popular cameras they make because it is so tiny, but packed with features. The camera has an 8.0 Megapixel resolution, which means that you can print pictures up to 16x20 inches in good quality. It has a 3.0x zoom.

Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W130

The Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W130 has a lot of the same features as the Canon, but its resolution is slightly better at 8.1 megapixels and it has a bit higher zoom, at 4.0x.

Add to that the fact that it is just a bit cheaper (a savvy online shopper can find it for around $150) and this one is also a great buy.

Sony has something called Smile Shutter technology so it can "capture smiles as they happen." I've read several reviews that say this is a great feature for photographing small children.

Both cameras also feature image stabilization and face detection to help you take better, sharper photos.
