Buying a GPS for Christmas? Here's My Take

I love finding my way. I love to combine a map with my sense of direction, and I never think anybody -- short of being kidnapped and dropped in the wilderness -- should use the phrase, "I'm lost." If nothing else, it cuts against the holiday spirit.

Approaching the matter from that perspective, I welcome using a GPS unit to "get there". I know I can make my way without one, but I think a GPS adds -- not subtracts -- to the experience of getting to your destination, so it would make a great Christmas gift.

With that said, I would like to share my take on what to do if you don't have a GPS, or even an old-fashioned paper map, and your sense of direction is non-existent, or is failing you at an important moment. If you don't get a GPS for Christmas, not to worry.

As long as you are traveling on roads, this method will work. If you are not traveling on roads, get thee an eagle scout.

The only reason I am "in the know" about this is I have delivered a pizza or two in my lifetime -- at Christmas, July 4, Super Bowl, pretty much anytime of year. A fact that ought to come naturally for people, but never seems to until I mention to someone trying to find an address (and that would not be apparent to me without my aforementioned experience) follows.

Most towns in the U.S. (and many other locales) have a pizza shop that delivers. This pizza shop is usually located on Main Street, or some other "main drag" in the town -- so it is easy enough to find. To the wall inside that business, is taped a map of local streets. This is always the case. The map on the wall is as essential to a pizza delivery business as flour and tomato sauce.

These local street maps make your destination street easy as pizza pie to find, and most any food delivery shop manager will let you see the map -- or even point out your street to you, if you ask nicely.

What if you are horrible with maps, you say! Not to worry. Pizza drivers make most of their income from tips. Offer one five dollars to lead you to your destination on the way to her next delivery, and you'll be all set. Now, that's what I call a GPS unit!

I tend to agree with you, LondonGirl. Nothing wrong with good old maps and following your nose.
