Buzzin' For Big Bass in the News

  • Fishing report: Winter fishing is hot: bass on bite at Clear LakeThe St. Helena Star1 second ago

As promised, here’s a recap of our Nov. 18 bass trip with pro guide Bob Myskey (349-4460). Stan Press and I boated and released 34 large mouth bass on live jumbo minnows in six hours. Stan was the numbers king, right from the start. But I caught the two biggest bass, both at 6.5 pounds.

They come from different fishing backgrounds, but UCF’s Dustin Lauer and Matt Norman know how to combine their skills to put some bass in the boat.

The buzzbait can be worked through all but the densest weed beds.

Bass fishing can be very rewarding when the proper bass fishing lures are used at the right time. The buzzbait happens to be one the best topwater bass fishing lures. It is well suited for all types of water, clean to dirty and the giant lunkers that these lures produce makes them a welcome addition to everyone's bass fishing tackle.

What's all the buzz?

The buzzbait can be worked through all but the densest weed beds. With a hook that rides in an upward position, it allows the lure to be worked over partially submerged logs and branches without hanging up. With many different styles to choose from, there is a buzzbait for every type of weather and water.

Buzzbaits make a noise that I believe triggers aggression more than hunger. This is a plus when trying to get a lunker bass to hit while it is bedding. The bass on beds are not in a feeding mood, but rather in "protection mode". A large noisy lure such as a buzzbait may be seen as a threat to the bed in the eyes of a large spawning bass and they will often times hit it in an attempt to make it go away!

Picking the proper buzzbait

Size depends mainly upon water conditions and water clarity. Smooth, calm water that is fairly clear calls for a small buzzbait and with visibility this good; a more subtle approach works best. Windier days call for larger buzzbaits; these are easier for the fish to see when the water is a bit choppy. Keep in mind the downfall, a larger buzzbait offers much more wind resistance, if using a baitcaster, you may need to adjust your anti-backlash and will be limited in casting distance.

Color is not all that important when it comes to buzzbait. Stick with the basics, black and white, both ends of the spectrum of contrast. This is not to say that other colors such as chartreuse, orange, or yellow can't be equally productive, I have caught my fair share of bass on these also. It may be because the color resembles a food that they are eating that time of year. As long as you have black ones and white ones, you can't go wrong with buzzbaits!

Trailer hooks are a good accessory to consider for your buzzbait. A trailer hook can be used on a buzzbait to increase the number of hook ups. When bass are "short striking", as they often do when on the bed, the trailer hook provides an extra hook that hangs out and from the original hook to the rear of the buzzbait. The downfall to the trailer hook is, it may have a tendency to get hung up in heavy cover or partially submerged wood.

When And Where To Get A Buzz!

When the water is between 70 and 92 degrees Fahrenheit, it is right for buzzbait. Cooler water seems like a hopeless cause using a buzzbait.

A lot of anglers feel the water must be calm to use a buzzbait, not true, a little bit of ripple on the surface will actually enhance your success with a buzzbait. Don't hesitate to fish a buzzbait in rough water, when possible, cast it into the wind and retrieve it downwind with the waves.

Try a buzzbait in the rain, this is a very noisy lure that is also easy to see despite the disturbance that the raindrops make on the surface of the water.

Buzzbaits work well under sunny skies also. When the sun is shining, it makes it easier to see the submerged beds with bass on them. Just keep in mind, if you can see them, they can see you, so stealth is in order so that you don't spook them.

Where to find bedding bass in the Spring will be along the shallows, flats, and shorelines in up to 6' of water depending on water clarity. They are usually in much shallower water than that when spawning and casting a buzzbait repeatedly over those beds can turn into a load of fun.

Even when the bass aren't spawning the buzzbait will produce big bass. Try casting buzzbaits around docks, along weedbeds, submerged wood, over rocks and boulders, and under overhanging trees when the bass aren't on the beds. When they do come off the bed, they are very hungry.

Don't be afraid to tie on a good BUZZbait at your favorite bass fishing hole, every bass fisherman knows that there is nothing better than watching the aggressive strike of a large bass hitting your topwater lure! So grab a friend and get out and go fishing when you can, cause it's Gooooood Fer Ya!
