Imagine a box full of electronic gadgetry, with four wheels driven by a little motor inside. Why not picture it with eyes and a mouth to give it some character. It has lights and bells and whistles.

Inside it has a battery. This is a special battery, because it is charged by an external power source without using cables. Instead it uses an induction coil to receive the external power.

It also has a unique electro-magnetic system. As long as it has power it radiates a magnetic field around the box, and if another magnetic field comes close an electro-magnet transforms that magnetic field to more power, causing the little box to buzz with energy, dinging its bells, tooting its whistles, blinking its lights and whizzing around with excitement.

Imagine the effect when two or more such boxes meet and are close together. They exchange energy that makes them buzz and whiz about, full of bells and whistles and flashing lights. The boxes just love being close to other boxes. This companionship gives them such a buzz they don’t ever want it to stop.

Now imagine trying to get these buzzing boxes to line up in neat little rows, each box close to another. What a strain it would be for these boxes, in the vitalizing magnetic field of their neighbours, to sit still and not be allowed to peep or flash or ring or buzz away. The only way to make this possible is to disconnect their electro-magnet coils.

Unfortunately there are many such groups of little boxes who were made with disconnected coils. Many of them gather together with other disconnected boxes, lining themselves up hoping to feel a buzz. Up front stands a rather important looking box. This one looks different, acts different and even makes different noises. He speaks to the other boxes about flashing and tooting and ringing. “Every box should be ringing its bell!” he declares. “Every box should be tooting its horn! Every box should be shining its light! And here is how to do it!” He holds up a book, The Buzzing Boxes Handbook, and urges every box to read it and study it and memorize it and tell it to other boxes. Then he urges all boxes present to begin tooting and ringing and flashing. What a din, as each box tries its best to work its bells and whistles without the power to do so.

After each meeting the boxes go home exhausted, feeling they have failed, but hoping the other boxes didn’t notice. These are the disconnected boxes. They have lost the connection to the source of external power and their batteries need constant recharging. The ability to sense another box’s magnetic field is also lost as is their ability to create a strong magnetic field to be sensed by others.

What these poor buzz-less boxes need is a reconnection! Their coils and electro-magnets need reconnecting, then they can recharge from the external source and exchange power with one another.

Now watch out for the connected (reconnected) boxes! When they get together all the bells and whistles are sounding and their lights are shining bright. They buzz about with great excitement and joy as they share their power with one another. Their internal coils are drawing from the great external source. In fact they get the feeling that the source is inside them. They feel so free being able to be what they were meant to be, buzzing and blinking boxes. They don’t need to force anything, they are what they are. No box is daring to tell the other boxes what to do. They don’t need to constantly check the handbook to know how to work. They know what they are and what they should do. But they do enjoy opening their handbooks from time to time to remind themselves of their inner workings and learn more about their source of power.

Another notable difference with the connected and functioning boxes is when they are alone. They still buzz and toot and ding because of their internal source of power, a power that is external, yet somehow also internal. Knowing this vitalizes their batteries to no end and off they go, buzzing, dinging, tooting and shining!

Thanks. I actually wrote this five years ago, and just spotted it on my hard drive. I thought it would be fun to post it.
