Tinnitus may be perceived as buzzing in ear. It is actually a perception of sound, which does not originate from an external source. In simpler terms you hear noises that others do not. These noises may be pure tones, as if a note plays inside your ears, or pure noise in quality as in roaring, clicking, and thumping sound. In some cases, earache and dizziness are also present.

This ear condition is not a disease. It is a symptom. When you have it, you most likely are having an underlying disorder that brings about the ear trouble. There are many causes. Noise induced hearing impairment is the leading cause. At the same time, other disorders like Meniere’s disease, allergies, head injury, temporomandibular jaw injury, sinus problems and upper respiratory tract infections. Other factors that increase people’s susceptibility to tinnitus are old age, stress, and ototoxic medication. Other experts point out that diet has something to do with developing tinnitus. People with the condition have been found out to have low levels of vitamin b 12 and magnesium. Other studies show that caffeine, sodium, and cholesterol increase the risk of hearing impairment symptoms like buzzing in ear.

The wisest thing one can do during the advent of the condition is to go to a GP for a check up. The earlier the diagnosis, the better. A medical practitioner can help you with identifying the source and the culprit of your condition. Your GP could refer you to a specialist, say an audiologist or an otolaryngologist. They pin down what is causing you to hear buzzing in ear and introduce you to various treatment options.

The treatment for tinnitus depends on the cause. If you have a severe ear infection, antibiotics help you heal faster. When you have impacted earwax, it will be removed. However, not all causes are curable. Meniere’s disease is one of those incurable conditions. Half of the cases of tinnitus have idiopathic origins. Meaning, the cause is not determined. In this case, all efforts spent to find the culprit are futile.

Tinnitus masking devices have been known to make people feel better as these worn gadgets emit a pleasant background noise to drown the noises in your ears. Doctors may prescribe anti-anxiety drugs to people who experience nervousness or antidepressants to help people deal with the depression that comes with tinnitus.

Cognitive behavior therapy acclimatizes patients that tinnitus is not a threatening condition and helps people deal with anxiety and depression. Relaxation techniques aid people to calm the nerves. Neuroscience has a compelling evidence that tinnitus is due to overactive neural activity. That is why relaxation may be able to alleviate buzzing in ear. Nevertheless, research about tinnitus continues. Scientists have yet to understand this condition.
