Tell the Truth

So many people I know lie, casually or as a matter of course. After all, higher primates enjoy the ability to do so; it is, in fact, considered a sign of intelligence. And it can make life easier sometimes.

Here's why not:

You tell the truth not because it's easy, but because it's right.

If you develop a reputation for lying, you'll be stuck with it.

If you develop a reputation for honesty, others will like and trust you.

So, when is it OK to lie? Only you can decide.

What constitutes a lie? Again, not for me to say. My belief is that's it's fine--and often desirable--to "act as if." That is, pretend you're happy to see someone you're not especially glad to see; act pleased if presented with a gift you dislike, et cetera.

Trust me. :-P

I tend to call those times "social behaviors." I knew a woman once who was so truthful no one could stand her.

hahahaha well, ya had to be there. Marisue

I do hear ya, Marisue! Yes, of course: No one should be so truthful as to be obnoxious. Good point!
