Conjugated Linoleic Acid

CLA is not something new in the weight loss industry. Actually it was first discovered in 1979 and that is already thirty years ago. The name conjugated linoleic acid comes from the fact that it is a group of polyunsaturated fats that all have eighteen carbon atoms and conjugated double bonds between them. There are a lot of different isomers from which the most popular are the 10-trans-cla and 11-cis-cla which are the isomers used by the weight loss industry.

Health Effects

Besides being popular as a weight loss supplement, CLA diet pills have a handful of health effects. The bad thing is that they are not all categorized as health benefits. At first CLA was found to have muscle building and fat burning effects that were significant. This was in the animal tests. Unfortunately these results never transported to the human tests and there has never been any good results in reliable studies.

Au contraire CLA has been shown to have bad effects on human health. A notable health benefit that you get from losing weight is the increase of your insulin sensitivity. This means that losing weight will drive you away from adult diabetes. CLA has actually been shown to increase insulin resistance, hence decrease insulin sensitivity. This is controversy as mentioned. This has been found with the isomers used by the diet pill industry.

The other isomers such as 9-cis and 11-trans have been also studied. These isomers have been noted to have positive effects on cancer cells and these are the isomers that are considered natural. They are found in dairy products and in red meat. They might prevent cancer.

If you are trying to lose weight stay away from CLA. For weight loss purposes it is no good and the tried and proven method of learning correct nutrition and exercise is the only way to significantly improve your results.
