COMMUNICATION:THE NECESSARY TOOL

A judge was interviewing a woman regarding her divorce, asked, " What are the grounds for your divorce?"

The woman replied, "About four acres and a nice little home in the middle of the property with stream running by."

"No. I meant what is the foundation of this case?" asked the judge.

"It is made of concrete, brick and mortar," she responded.

The judge asked, "What are your relations like?"

"I have an aunt and uncle living here in town, and so do my husband's parents". The lady replied.

He said, "Do you have a real grudge."

"No," " We have a two-car carport and have never really needed one."

Finally, in frustration, the judge asked, "Lady, why do you want a divorce?"

"I've never wanted a divorce. My husband does. He said he couldn't communicate with me."

Is it sounding exaggerated?

Professor Sander Schroevers, the president of the International Institute of Business Communication in Paris, (who was in India recently) shares various examples of how a slack inter-culture communication can affect a business. He says when Nescafé (instant coffee) was outsourced to South America, the product did not sell. The reason is that Nescafé in South America means ‘it is not coffee'. The car company Mazda also tried to sell in South America, which was a huge failure Mazda was called ‘La Puta' which means ‘lady of the public'.

Schroevers feels with globalization and the Internet, the world has become much smaller place. But, the quality of communication is deteriorating. "Thus there is a great need to understand your partner's culture when you deal with a company from a different country", says Sander.

Do you think that I need to communicate much better !!!!!!!

There are things far, far more important than business that we need to be able to communicate with each other about. The survival of the human race depends upon our ability to work together.
