Walter Reed Army Medical Center opened a new investigation into outside financial relationships of a former Army surgeon who an Army inquiry found last yr. published falsified research on a Medtronic bone-growth product used on wounded Iraq veterans.
Army Doctor Falsified Study of Medtronic Bone Repair Product "Infuse"
5-13-09 NY Times. Duff Wilson and Barry Meier reported today that former Army surgeon at Walter Reed, Timothy R. Kuklo, who was receiving payments from Medtronic, falsified the results of an unauthorized study of Medtronic's bone growth product Infuse. Dr. Kukla is now an associate professor at Washington University Medical School in St. Louis. The British medical journal which published the results of the Kukla's phony study has withdrawn the article. In addition to falsifying the results to make the product appear to be more effective, Kukla reported that the product was used in 138 cases, a number greater than Walter Reed could find records for, and he forged the names of four Walter Reed doctors falsely claiming that they were co-authors of his article. Dr. Kukla is a graduate of West Point and Georgetown University Law School. He declined to comment on the NYTimes article. Medtronic said it supported some of Kuklo's research at Walter Reed and that he remains a paid consultant of the company.
COMMENT: Kuklo should be fired by Washington University Medical School and lose his license to practice medicine! Regulations governing payments by pharmaceutical companies to doctors should be tightened.

Shame on Medtronic, Kuklo, Walter Reed and Washington University Medical School. My impression is that these kinds of deals are more common than most of us realize.
Dr. Kuklo is a prime example of what's wrong with "research" conducted by doctors at top medical schools paid for by drug and medical device companies. The medical schools and the drug companies need to clean up their acts.
