Cabinet Hinges
75Cabinet hinges are an important part of cabinet construction, they provide the ability for cabinet doors to open and close smoothly and efficiently. Hinges can also provide additional design elements to your cabinetry. They can also be purchased in a hidden design structure to provide a clean, unhindered appearance. There are hundreds of different hinges to choose from so you should be able to find one to fit your project or need. You can purchase hinges from a variety of hardware, home improvement or retail stores. Hinges range from small delicate brass types used in jewelry boxes to large heavy steel ones used on bank vaults. The most commonly used for cabinet door hinges is referred to as a butt hinge, it is strong but non adjustable. They vary in size from 0.50in to 6.0in.
Butt hinges are available in many sizes and types; they are used for all types of doors from house entry doors to jewelry boxes to a cabinet door hinge. It is most commonly used because of its neat and trim appearance. It consists of two rectangular sides with multiple holes for screws. The sides are connected by a pin or metal rod. If you take out this pin the sides will disconnect, useful for when you want to remove the door. Both sides are mortised, or recessed: one into the edge of the door, the other in the jamb, or door framework. When the door is closed, the sides of the hinge meet, or “butt” together, with only the pin section showing.
Choosing the right cabinet hardware hinges is important. It affects the usability of the cabinet as well as the finished look of the cabinet. When installing hinges take into consideration how much the door is able to be opened once the hinges are installed. Some hinges restrict the radius of the swing while others allow a freely and fully opening door. You can choose hinges in a variety of looks and colors. Brass, Copper, Black and almost any color or design you can think of are available in cabinet hardware choices. You can choose to have your hinges coordinate with your other cabinet hardware, such as knobs and handles or, you might choose hinges that blend into the background or are not seen once installed.
Surface mounted cabinet hinges are those that can be fully seen when looking at the cabinet face. These are usually the decorative and fancifully designed ones. Choose these if you want your hinges to be a part of your cabinet and room decor.
Semi concealed hinges allow the hinge pin only to be seen and the hinge plates are concealed behind the door frame. These allow a minimal amount of the hardware to show and interface with your other decor. Be sure to choose an appropriate color to enhance the look you are after.
European hinges, also known as blum cabinet hinges, are a completely hidden type of hinge. All parts of the hinge are installed on the inner surface of the door and cabinet. This type of hinge would be a good choice if you do not wish the hardware to be seen or are looking for a sleek appearance.
There are many more choices available to the cabinet hinge consumer. When you decide on the style you are looking for do some searching and you will undoubtedly find a hinge that will do the job without interfering with the look you desire.
