Cabinet Knobs - Removal and Installation
67Replacing Your Cabinet Knobs
Available in many different shapes and styles, cabinet knobs are one of the easiest pieces of furniture accompaniment to replace. However, with so many different types available, there are several different fixing methods that may need to be carried out.
Getting Started
After deciding on the most suitable new knobs for the piece of furniture, the first task to carry out is the removal of the old cabinet knobs. For most older cabinets, this is a very straightforward process. Opening the drawer fully – or removing it completely if possible – the head of screw should be clearly visible on the inside of the drawer. Unless glue has been used (which is very rare), this screw is the only piece of equipment holding the knob to the cabinet drawer. To remove the knob, simply hold onto the knob with one hand and begin unscrewing, anti-clockwise, until the screw is completely free from the knob and drawer front. Unless more than one screw has been used (or glue has been applied), the handle should fall off. If it does not, then check for another screw first and if there are no obvious screws visible, there is a chance it may be glued and therefore gently try turning the knob, easing it away from the drawer.
Installing
Before installing a new set of cabinet knobs, the instructions that came with the knobs should be read thoroughly as they can provide a great insight into how to install the knobs properly, as well as any specific requirements that are needed.
Aside from the most common and traditional method of fixing a knob to a drawer cabinet – which is simply the reverse of the above removal technique – the other most popular method is to hook the knob on. This works by first screwing in the appropriate screws into the drawer at the specified width apart (which is set out in the accompanying instructions). The knob is then lifted onto the two screws, pushed down towards the floor and then along in one direction, effectively locking the knob in place. Common on more modern knobs, it is a fantastic way of installing knobs on a cabinet that may have several knob changes over the years.
