In Cosmetic Dentistry - Age and Experience Matters
Doctor Arciga arrived in Cabo San Lucas when Marina Blvd. was a dirt landing strip where John Wayne and Dean Martin would fly in to go fishing for 1,400lb monster marlins. He was the 2nd dentist in Cabo. Much has changed over the years, except Dr. Jorge’s clinic.
He still prefers to work alone, using an ancient motor-less dental chair “It never lets me down” he says with a smile. “Dental tourists on vacation can’t afford to wait for a new chair motor to arrive from Mexico City.” I think to myself of several power windows in cars I’ve owned that refused to budge and nod my head in agreement.
Nevertheless, this old-school maestro uses the latest sterilization equipment, intra-oral camera, computers, and the best specialists around when needed because he knows the difference between what’s best and what’s an unnecessary expense that only adds to the cost of treatments. Like $15,000 dental chairs that stop working when a special fuse goes south.
I’ve been a patient in fancy clinics with the expensive chairs, marble and ferns, and I’ve paid the freight. Often at the larger places – you get younger dentists not long out of dental school. I’ve seen that in Los Cabos, Tijuana, Mazatlan and Juarez. In dentistry as well as other arts – age and experience matters.
After 30 years, and 1,000’s of patients, Doctor Jorge’ Arciga is known worldwide for his perfectly balanced and color-matched full-mouth cosmetic restorations that give people that movie star smile for the price of a Saturday matinee’ compared to rediculous stateside prices. He's brightened the smiles of Mexican beauty queens, local politicians, and celebrities. But mostly just regular folk like me that want a great job and can't afford the prices back home.
He is a Certified Cosmetic Oral Rehabilitation Dentist. This is a specialty not recognized by the ADA or taught in US dental schools. Thus American dentists have to learn on their own - the hard way, by practicing on their patients.
He is considered a pioneer in dental tourism having catered for decades to patients from all over the world. Many bring their families in annually for their routine dental work, saving more than enough money to pay for the family vacation. Local resorts rely on him for their guests dental emergencies. His expertise having saved many tourist’s vacations.
After graduating from dental college and taking additional specialty classes in implants, he did something I’ve never known another Mexican professional to do…. He obtained another degree in Teaching English. He knew that he wanted to concentrate on serving the foreign community and wanted to be able to communicate perfectly. And he does, with a quiet warmth that immediately makes one feel like being at home with an old friend.
At 55 years, he’s in his prime and could be working 7 days a week given his popularity. But he considers Sundays sacred. It’s his day off to run marathons.
