CAFFEINE: How Much is Too Much?
Scientists these days are saying that caffeine is just as addictive as cocaine... I can hear you now..."Oh no! The health Po-Po are turning into CONTROL FREAKS! Not my COFFEE!!!"... You need not worry...much. If you are pretty much a healthy person, you don't need to give up your coffee!
Caffeine:
Caffeine, unlike cocaine, is pretty harmless. However, too much caffeine can make you jittery, anxious, and you may even get a headache. Withdrawing from a caffeine addiction can be very painful, as drug addicts will tell you about ANY drug. Caffeine IS a drug! It's just a legal drug... It would be wise to keep track of your caffeine intake everyday if you are worried you are getting too much.
As a reminder, (out of experience) quitting caffeine "cold-turkey" is NOT advised, as you might get extreme headaches, stomachaches, and feel like you are "crashing", or becoming very tired all at once. A gradual step, one soda, or cup of coffee less a day will work far better!
How much is too much?:
Almost every person in America consumes caffeine is one way, or another, every day. The coffee lover drinks an average of three, to three-and-a-half cups a day... (That puts me waaaaayyyyy above normal, as I usually drink three QUARTERS of a POT in the morning, then go right to the Mountain Dew!)
A five-ounce cup of automatic drip joe contains about 103 milligrams of caffeine. (That's cup, not mug. Mugs hold 10 ounces-206mg!) Most experts say you should not consume more than 450mg of caffeine per day, depending on your weight, age, and general health., as your body can build a tolerance for caffeine.
Overdoing it...
Too much caffeine can cause abnormal heart rhythms, or raise blood pressure. It can affect cholesterol levels slightly, but researchers have noted that any rise in "bad" cholesterol can be offset with an equal amount of "good" cholesterol. Drinking too much coffee can cause calcium loss, increasing the chance of osteoporosis and hip fracture. Women should drink at least one cup of milk a day to offset the affects of the coffee.
Good News About Caffeine:
Caffeine's stimulating effect can be useful. It can improve your mental and physical performance, make a dull task go by quicker and help with fatigue on long road trips. It helps some pain relievers work more efficiently, and research shows it gives metabolism a boost.
Caffeine and Pregnancy:
Doctors of all sorts have all agreed on one thing... Consuming caffeine while you are pregnant, may increase the risk of miscarriage. It is best to cut down drastically, if not stop completely until after the baby is born.
CAFFEINE FACTS:
Wanna know something I didn't know before now? Gourmet coffees, espresso, cappuccino, and all the rest have less, not more, caffeine than robusta beans! (The mainstream bean for automatic drip coffee) Also, dark roast coffee... The darker roast burn off more caffeine, so although the coffee looks and tastes stronger, it isn't... Espresso, which looks and tastes the strongest of all, is made by forcing water so quickly through the grounds that it doesn't absorb much caffeine. So, as long as you are healthy, stop worrying about the caffeine!!!

Mmmmm... Homer...Coffee....
Great and informative hub!!!
I am not a big coffee drinker. I get most of my caffeine from energy drinks, sodas and No-Doz.
Is TheRealTruth your husband?
I cannot survive this jungle without caffeine. I'm good with the coffee until I am spending time in the port o potty at work.
and quit flirting, dork.

Great Hub Mamadragonfly. Did you know that Lindsay Lohan said that she got her weight down by drinking three cups of coffee. Others have said that they drink coffee to ward off unemployment blues. They all should read your article. Good Job.
coffee is better than mountain dew anyway
You guys are hilarious! No, dork, therealtruth is not my husband...lol And thanks, linda, for the good advice! I'm a caffeine addict...OBVIOUSLY!!! And I'll admit that I take in waaaaayyyyy too much! I am now, suffering with a horrible back ache, and caffeine ISN'T helping... but it's still goooood!!!
Mmm.. I have to admit I'm a caffeine addict. Shoot me when I don't get my coffee...After I wake up at least 3 mugs, at work at least 3 mugs, when I get home, at least 4 mugs. I'm ashamed, but it just love it :-D
Lazur- Don't feel ashamed! You COULD be addicted to other ILLEGAL drugs, right? I am seriously addicted to caffeine... I get up in the morning, drink at least 3 mugs, (as you do) and from there, I dump out the last drop of cold coffee, and grab a Mountain Dew... And I drink MD the rest of the day... I AM thinking about cutting down on the MD... After a while, it starts to taste "syrupy" so I have to switch to something else for a while...lol
SCOTT- Thanks for the "eyes" compliment! lol
Pioneer- I agree... Decaf is a waste of time and energy...lol
JUSTIN- Your right, but I can't drink COFFEE all day, I'm going to switch to something like GINGER ALE, or something for a while... HAHAHA! (RIGHT!)
Goldentoad- HAHAHA That's too funny! My uncle actually says that morning coffee is his "oral laxative" lol
And TOM-.... JJJJAAAAAVVVVVVAAAAAAA!!!!!! javajavajavajavajava!!!!!!
Coffee is just one of those pleasures that is good in moderation. I especially get the jitters if i have more than two cups in the morning.
i need some coffee right now
Coffee... the pleasure of mornings! :)
I adore coffee, but I feel better when I drink cappuccino (coffee and milk in dust). I cannot live without taste of coffee. Thumbs up!
I love french vanilla cappuccino! My hubby sucks up by bringing me home one once in a while! lol
Thanks Tatjana!
Great hub and great pictures, I myself love coffee and energy drinks, I try to cut back but it doesnt seem to work for me. White chocolate mocha, yummy!
rachel- thanks so much for the input! Let me introduce myself:
Hi, My name is Shannon, and I'm a caffeine-addict... lol
No, really, I am. I get up in the morning, drink most of a pot of coffee, then switch right to Mountain Dew, as I dump the last bit of cold coffee down the drain... I admit it...
By all means, I didn't mean to say that caffeine was "harmless"... I am sure some people are more sensitive to the effects of caffeine than some others. I know after a while of constant use, (as I do) your body gets used to the effects, and so therefore, gets immuned to caffeine... Which causes the withdrawl symptoms when you slow down, or stop using caffeine.
Funny- It sounds as if one of these days, caffeine will be made illegal because of how addictive it is, and how us "caffeine-addicts" use the word in a phrase... (I'm a USER of caffeine... lmao)
Thanks again for your comment rachel!
Mike- I guess I've actually never tried an energy drink (if your referring to like Red Bull and those drinks) But, funny enough, I refuse to buy them for my 13 year old son. I've heard they are not good for the younger age... As far as coffee goes- JAVA JAVA JAVA!
Thanks for the comment Mike!
Another Addict, I find if I don't eat and drink double shot coffee which is what most Cafe's out here sell, then it trashes my liver function. Today I feel like I have had way to much, I dropped from a huge amount to around 10 cups a day. I know someone that drinks way more, pretty much bottomless, and smokes and has the constitution of a 40 year old, He is over 70, so whatever suits you, there are lots of things worse than Coffee. Things far worse for your health like living with Google Adsense and their rules. lol.
mandy
Amen Sista! Google Adsense is not very forgiving...
I, actually, have cut way down on caffeine... Not for any other reason rather than I am on a "health kick" right now...lol
I'll be back to the full monte pretty soon!
Thanks for the comment Mandy! (Especially about the Adsense) lol
Just as an add-in, I have cut waaaaaay down on caffeine. Now, I only drink three quarters of a pot of coffee in the morning, then I drink Ginger Ale the rest of the day... (CAFFEINE FREE GINGER ALE!!!) And strangely enough, Mountain Dew, or Pepsi just doesn't taste right anymore... Too syrupy! (I know Justin... the jokes on me!!!)
A great help for those who may experience heart palpitations from caffeine overdoses is to "bear down" like giving childbirth. OR holding your nose, closing your mouth, holding your breath and then trying to puch the air out. (Like popping your ears after an airplane trip) With of these maneuvers should "snap" your heart back into a normal rhythm. I'm not a doctor, these are tricks my doctor showed me for when I O.D. on caffeine.
