See how calculating BMI can show better results through moderate exercise

If you are like many people in our society, more than likely you've spent some time calculating BMI (Body Mass Index), body fat ratio and other tools to determine whether you are overweight. Congratulations on at least going that far, however the journey towards a healthier, lighter lifestyle is just beginning. Yes, there does need to be a commitment to change and live a healthier life, but it is not as difficult as it may seem.

There are a number studies that have shown how being overweight can cause a slew of additional illnesses and conditions, commonly known as metabolic syndrome. Many including the top ones of heart disease, diabetes and stroke. But its not all bad news as recent study done at Duke University Medical Center's department of medicine has shown that just 30 minutes of moderate excercise greatly reduced the risk of getting metabolic syndrome. According to the study, which was published in the Dec 15th issue of American Journal of Cardiology, they saw a drop of 14% in the number of participants who had the syndrome. Simply put, even having moderate exercise will reduce the chances of you getting other health issues to complicate your life. Calculating BMI is not that difficult & can prevent a laundry list of illnesses

According to a new set of guidelines released by the National Heart, Lung and Blood institute has prominently noted that obesity and a complete lack of physical activity which leads to being overweight, significantly increase the risk for heart disease, diabetes, sleep apnea, increased chance of colon cancer, problems with the gall bladder and high blood pressure.

These guidelines encourage people to plan some activity in their live to greatly reduce the chances of getting these things. As mentioned earlier, even moderate exercise will greatly reduce ones risk of obtaining the illnesses listed.

So the next time you think you are not in any condition to get into shape, put some comfortable shoes on and walk around your building or climb the stairs during your next lunch break. Anywhere from 10-15 minutes of activity a day will not only give you energy, but you can keep off additional pounds and minimize your health risk.

As a bicycle racer, I really identify with knowing your BMI...the less you weigh in cycling, the more power to weight you have. But you can get too lean as well, so knowing yoru BMI can help you keep from getting too thin.

Onthe other end of the spectrum, when I was overwieght, i tracked my BMI and was thrilled when it got into the normal range. Now I track it monthly along with my weight (and my power output on mybike!)
