California Supreme Court Declares Ban On Gay Marriages Illegal!

In a decisive 4-3 vote, the California Supreme Court shot down the hugely debated 2000 measure banning Gay marriages. “Domestic partnerships are not a good enough substitute for marriage,” Chief Justice Ron George said in his written opinion.

The case comes from challenges to the state law made by the City of San Francisco officials and twenty couples who were married in civil ceremonies in 2004 after Mayor Gavin Newsom issued marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

The high court invalidated those marriages six months later which led to this case and ultimately this decision.

As can be expected, residents of the City of San Francisco, gay or otherwise, are cheering in the streets.

In my opinion, it’s about time. Religious opponents of gays marrying need to sit down and shut up. Statistics have proven time and time again, that gay couples stay together longer, are model citizens, make great parents, especially to children in need of parenting and rejected by a “straight” society, have lots of disposable income and contribute healthily to their communities.

Really folks who cares what goes on behind closed doors between two consenting adults? Keywords: CONSENTING ADULTS. If you were to look behind the locked doors of straight society, you’d be shocked to find some pretty weird stuff. And this from some pretty straight laced people.

As a native Californian and a spiritual – not a religious person – I say FINALLY! My western state has been known to lead the nation in many things and frankly, I was ashamed by the vote in 2000 banning Gay Marriages.

Someone has come to their senses. We need to get rid of this antiquated Victorian thinking that has kept us locked, as a society, in the dark ages.

Isn’t God all about LOVE anyway?

I'll do you one better....I am a very religious person, happilly so, and I applaud the California Supreme Court for this decision. I believe that God made us all unique and one of the ways that we are challenged in life is how we relate to other people who are perhaps very drastically different than we are. Who am I to judge another person just because they are different than I am? That's not for me to say. If what these people are doing is wrong, that is between God and them.

On a societal level, as much as the ultra-conservative right would like to think it is their business to judge everyone who is different than them, this decision does not affect anyone except the individuals who are gay and want to be married just like straight couples.

Thank you for your heartfelt and beautiful comments. You are right - no-one has the right to judge anyone else and as someone who came from a Christian background and experienced that judgement first hand, I tend towards judging them, which isn't the solution.

Father Mother God of All That Is emcompasses and loves us all equally and will never take sides in any religious battle, this I know to be true. Like a parent, who can choose between their children? You love them all equally as does the Most High with us.

Thank you Jim.
