I. Overview:
A sniper or marksman is usually a marksman that shoots targets from concealed positions or distances exceeding the capabilities of regular personnel. Snipers typically have specialized training and distinct high-precision rifles. In addition to marksmanship, military snipers are also trained in camouflage, field craft, infiltration, reconnaissance and observation techniques. (according to Wikipedia )
I really enjoy sniping, its basically all I do. I enjoy knowing that the enemy has little chance at combating against me (if im far enough away). And I just enjoy watching, really, a battle go on; and I have the one shot that could make a difference.
Sniping generally involves a Sniper scope attached to the top of usually a bolt action rifle, or rifle. But not always, you can run around no-scoped if you want to.
What Sniper Do I Use?
II. WHAT DO I USE?!:
I personally like all bolt actions in this game, some of you say, “how could you like the Arisaka? Its soooo weak!”. Not at all actually.please watch the video to the right of a bolt action comparison video on YouTube, I would like to consider it my personal Sniping bible. The main “commandment” you get out of it is: All Bolt Actions are created equal. So don’t believe those made up “stats” in game, they are only for show.
The Springfield Rifle
Springfield:
Scoped: My personal favorite. I'm not sure why I like it so much, maybe because of the flow of the scope coming up. I also like its smooth RoF (Rate of Fire), idk. I simply like it and recommend it.
Unscoped: I personally do not use this gun unscoped much, but if your wondering, the iron sights look like the iron sights on the BAR. (as you can see in the video above). they take some getting used to, but this gun unscoped is fantastic for pot shots.
The Arisaka Rifle
Arisaka:
Scoped: Just like the Springfield, the arisaka has a nice RoF. And your character seems to reload a bit faster, compared to the Springfield. I have also found this Bolt Action to be a bit quieter.
Unscoped: I really like the iron sights that this gun has. Its more of a focused sight and reminds me of a mini Type 99 iron sight.
The Mosin Nagant Rifle
Mosin-Nagant:
Scoped: This is a nice Bolt Action has a nice way of not lifting as much after firing a shot.
Unscoped: Probably my favorite unscoped Bolt Action. The iron sights are a nice arc, which makes it easy to get headshots.
The KAR-98k Rifle
Kar98:
Scoped: This has a nice RoF, and is great for quick scoping, simply because of how the scope comes up.
Unscoped: similar to the Mosin, it has a bit of a higher arc, great gun to use if your running around with it unscoped.
The PTRS 41 Rifle
PTRS:
Scoped: Although this wasn’t even a Sniper rifle during WWII, and is (imo) Treyarch’s “answer” to CoD 4’s 50 cal, I still love it. The fact that you can shoot without having to slide back a bolt, makes taking out multiple enemies very easy.
Unscoped: ... If only...
The M1-Garand Rifle
M1 Garand:
Scoped: fantastic. Although not included in the vid above, it is a great sniper. When your looking through the scope there is hardly any movement, making quick scoping a breeze.
Bolt Action Rifle Damages
III. Damages:
Now moving on to damages. The webpage linked to the right has a graph showing all damages weapons do.(please note that in core you have 100 health, and in Hardcore you have 30)
Alright its all about where you hit your target. As you can see In that link the higher you go up on a person, the higher the damage multiplier:
- Any hits in the legs or arms is a 1.0 damage multiplier. (so nothing)
- Any hits in the guts or abdomen is a 1.1 damage multiplier.
- Any hits in the chest or collar bone OR head is a 1.5 damage multiplier.
(this only pertains to Bolt Actions, the M1 is a little different, but holds the same principle)
So what does this mean? It means if you hit them in the center body WITH stopping power on, it’s a 1 shot kill. And if you hit them in the chest or above WITHOUT stopping power on, it’s a 1 shot kill. Simply put, aim for the chest. Even if they have Juggernaut on, and you hit them in the chest or above, it’s a 1 shot kill.
Sniping Styles
IV. Playing Styles:
To me there are 4 ways to use a sniper. “Camp” “Run and Gun” a thing I like to call “Mobile Camping” and "Scouting".
Camping: this involves going to 1 spot and hiding there the entire time. This can be very effective if you find the right “nest”. What you need for this to work out well are Bouncing Betties. Simply put, they cover your rear so that you can focus on what is in front of you.
Finding your nest is half the battle, don’t pick obvious spots that will get you killed (IE: Ouskirt’s church tower for instance). Pick places a bit off the beaten trail, or places that overlook that beaten trail. Try to look for Shadows, they help conceal you so that the enemy cannot see and find you. Once you have found that special spot, put Betties on your flanks and wait.
Run and Gun: I personally don’t do this much but it can be affective. You should use an unscoped bolt action with either the bayonet, or rifle grenade.
Check out this video to the right, fairly helpful: Like he said in the video, take your time with the shot. Your guy (especially in Core) can take quite a few shots, so just take your time. I suggest stopping power, bandolier and steady aim.
Mobile Camping: This is something I really enjoy. And I tend to go between this method and the “camping” method. What you generally do is try flanking the enemy hard left or hard right in the beginning of a match. Then you sit and wait, just like “camping” get a few kills and then move up. I personally like making circles around Outskirts using this method. The perks I use for this method include: Bomb Squad, Camouflage, and Dead Silence. This allows you to go through out the entire map unseen and undetected. Stopping Power is also a good perk to use if you are playing core gametypes. Its all a matter of personal preference.
SCOUTING: Another favorite. So yes this method basically involves stalking your prey. You may not want to actually kill your prey though, for that might make the “pack” aware of your position. You basically just go around the map find the enemy and tell your comrades. Your like an infinite Recon Plane, it can be very helpful and your allies just might thank you. You might not get as many kills as you would like though. I would suggest the same perks as Mobile Camping: Bomb Squad, Camouflage, Dead Silence. Once again its up to you whether to use Stopping Power or Camoflauge. Use what works best for you.
Sniping Tactics
V. General Tactics:
Now we apply both the damage sections and Methods section.
When sniping don’t just shoot the first guy you see. He may not be alone, asses the situation Every Time. Look out and find your opponents, if theres two people running around and you notice that one has an SMG and another has a Sniper Rifle. Common sense tells you to shoot the sniper first… right? Kill those who can kill you easier first to guarantee your survival.
Now when putting one in last stand don’t kill them immediately (unless your 1 away from dogs or whatever). Instead wait to see if one of their friends has second chance on them. You just might get Collateral Damage.
Playing with your enemy in this way can really tic them off and throw off their “game”. Think of the German Ground Sniper in Saving Private Ryan. He kills the man that the Medics just stopped bleeding. This really pissed them off.
And don’t forget about your trusty sidearm. Don’t think you’re some “leet, pro, no-scoper” hell I know im not. That handgun will save your life time and time again. Just don’t forget it is there in your pocket
Sniper Class Perks
VI. Preferred Perks:
Although I mentioned a few perks in the “methods” section. I think I will go through all of Perks that I use / I suggest you should use when sniping.
First or "Blue Perks"
>>>Blue Perks:
Special Grenade *3: Yes, believe it or not this can be very helpful, especially in the lower levels. I use this when I get my custom classes, and use it until I unlock Bomb Squad. Special grenades allow you to escape sticky situations. I suggest Tabun Gas. (but that’s just me)
Satchel Charges: Generally helpful for taking out Tanks in Core, they can also be used as replacement “betties” although you do have to manually activate them, so they are more or less good for taking out Tanks. So that you can continue sniping. If your on a map like Seelow try placing these things on the ground prematurely, so that when a tank finds where you are sniping, you can detonate it before he can blow you up.
Bomb Squad: This is the Blue Perk that I like to use and am currently using. This allows you to get around enemy lines. Although instead of actually blowing up the explosives I suggest finding a way around them. This makes the enemy think their flank is well protected but really a knife is about to go into their back.
Bouncing Betties: Very very handy. The Betty is the snipers best friend. She helps watch your back so that you can take care of the front. And you can tell her all of your little secr…. But seriously when it comes to using Betties with a “nest” try and find a camping spot that only has 1 entrance. This allows you to stay in that spot longer by only having to place 1 Betty at a time.
Bandolier: This is a good perk for both “run and gunning” with a sniper and the PTRS. When run and gunning you might have to take a few more shots because Bolt actions without scopes do less damage (40 as apposed to 70) for some reason. As for the PTRS lets just say 3 clips is not enough.
(Bazooka, frag *2 and flamethrower not included, because well… I don’t recommend them. If it fits your playing style by all means use them)
Second or "Red Perks"
>>>Red Perks:
Stopping Power: Very useful in Core. This allows you, like stated before, to get a 1 shot kill if you hit your target in the Center Body. With stopping Power, you can even take out Juggernauts in 1 shot as long as you hit them in the chest or above. I recommend this for newer snipers, run and gunners, and well anyone really…The reason stopping power is so important to use in core is because you will be seeing a lot of the symbol shown at the right.
Camouflage: My favorite perk ever in the history of history. I personally don’t like the enemy knowing where I am. This perk helps you get behind the enemy lines very easy. And allows you to stay in a general area without the enemy ever pinpointing your exact location. I personally have it on all my classes.
Sleight of Hand: Although I don’t use it much this perk can be very useful if your running around with an unscoped Bolt. It can be the advantage you need to win that CQC battle against multiple foes.
Double Tap: similar to Sleight of hand, very good for Unscoped bolts. allows you to fire more rounds off making CQC easier.
Overkill: This is a great Red Perk. Is that pistol not doing what you want it to? Put this on and have a back up SMG allowing you to move positions without having to worry about encountering someone up close.
Third or "Green Perks"
>>>Green Perks:
Deep Impact: This is a decent perk, its great if you only see the barrel of a gun out a window you can guestimate where the body is and fire. Fantastic!
Extreme Conditioning: My favorite low level perk. In fact I’m using it right now. This allows you to get to that dream camping spot in the beginning or middle of a match before the enemy does. It allows you to escape sticky situations. This combined with special grenade *3 can help you get out of an area if an enemy is too close.
Steady Aim: Good for the “run and gun” un-scoped snipers. It allows you to react to situations quickly, because some times there isn’t enough time to hold that Left Trigger.
Dead Silence: My favorite Green Perk. This combined with Bomb Squad and Camo makes you the invisible man. You can go ANYWHERE undetected, and that kind of freedom allows you to assist your allies by getting behind enemy flankes and doing stuff like Reconnaissance.
Iron Lungs: I use this from time to time (to get headshots). This perk adds a whole 5 seconds onto the original Breath Holding time. 5 seconds feels like forever in this game and it allows you to line up the perfect shot.
Reconnaissance: I use this when it’s unlocked. It allows you to know exactly where all tanks, dogs and where the Artillery is going. Very helpful if at least one team member has it on. This allows you to leave your camping spot if you must, just because you’ve pissed off the enemy enough to drop a Artillery directly on you and you only.
Quickscoping Information
VII. Quickscoping:
Quickscoping is something that anyone who plans on sniping in core gametypes needs to learn. It needs to not only become something you can it needs to be instinct .To become an effective mobile sniper you really have to either practice this skill with friends in private matches or learn the hard way in online multiplayer.
Quickscoping is important to learn because unlike many people belive "no-scoping" is not a reliable skill. Regardless of what montages you watch on Youtube you will not be able to no scope someone with any amount of reliability when you run up on them. Where no scoping is not very reliable, quickscoping is.
Its hard to explain quickscoping in text format, so the next best thing is to watch a video demonstrating how to do it effectively. Once again I highly suggest getting in a match with friends on a small map like dome and practicing quickscopes only with one another with various snipers. Its by far the easiest way to learn. The video to the right however will help you begginers and intermediates alike.

Sniping for "Noobs"
VIII. “Sniping for noobs”:
I would suggest looking at the “camping” section of this post. Just a little above this.
Camping is how I started back in CoD 3, it can be very effective, just like stated above, if you camp in the right spot.
As for perks I would use:
*Bouncing Betties (you need to focus on your front)
*Stopping power (making it easier to get the kill)
*Iron Lungs (this gives you all time in the world to get the shot off, and by all the time in the world I mean +5 seconds added onto the breath holding original time)
If you have the PTRS unlocked, I would use this. It allows you to get another shot off if you missed the first one. If you dont have the PTRS strive to get the Sniper Scope for the M1 Garand. when looking through the sights there is next to no movement, making traking your targets easier.
Just take your time and focus. If your still having trouble then take the time to watch all of these sniper videos on youtube. It covers EVERYTHING from BEGINNER to ADVANCED.
