World At War, the latest offering in the highly popular Call of Duty series, is a first person action shooting game which is set amidst the most famous battles of world war 2. Developed by Treyarch and published by Activision you can play it on your PC, PS3, Xbox 360, and the Nintendo Wii and DS consoles.

Fans of the previous games will be happy to find out that the gameplay is very familiar to Call of Duty 4, with the main difference being new settings, campaign missions and levels. If it aint broke don't fix it, and many the Call of Duty games were never broke so it is a good thing in my opinion that they haven't spoiled it with too much tinkering.

General Differences and Improvements

Although this is basically the same game as the last outing in the franchise, there are still differences. The main thing is that World at War has taken the realism to a whole new level. The graphics are better than ever, and because of this when you are playing it you become totally engulfed by the game. You feel as if you really are a soldier in the middle of nowhere, fighting for your life in decayed environments.

Call of Duty: World at War has also adopted a more mature theme than in previous games. This one builds on the grittiness and darkness of war to give a really brooding atmosphere. There is plenty of violence and blood for those demented people who enjoy that kind of thing.

Zombie Levels

When you have completed the whole game in campaign mode, and if you haven't had your fill of action, there is a added extra of the 'zombie levels' for you to play, which only become available after the credits have run at the end of the campaign mode. In these levels you must fight your way through hordes of monstrous zombies in a building until your death. Killing the zombies will gain you access to new weapons, but the zombies will not surrender easily. They will continuously break boarded entrances to try to reach and kill you. You have the option to rebuild the entrances to keep the zombies out the building as much as possible.

Nazi Zombies: If you wait for the game credits to end after you have completed the campaign, you get the opportunity to behave like a zombie hunter. The Nazi Zombie level is a mini-game set in a map called Nacht der Untoten, which is German for “night of the undead”. Your character is a soldier stuck in a deteriorated house, and your goal is to survive wave after wave of bloodthirsty zombies for as long as you possibly can.

Japanese Zombies: The Japanese zombie level is even more frenetic. The location for this extra level is called Shi No Numa (meaning 'Death Swamp' in Japanese) and the name  suits it well. You can play this map only after you complete the Nazi zombies level.

The Verdict

There really is nothing negative I can think of to say about this game. It has atmospheric and engaging graphics, a great storyline, and all of the action-packed gameplay that fans have come to expect from a Call of duty game . What more could a gaming geek ask for? 5 out of 5 stars!
