Calling all Artists to Breckenridge
67
The problem with classifying Breckenridge as a “ski town” is not that the title doesn’t fit. In fact, it fits quite nicely, which is why winter enthusiasts flock to this Summit County mountain town eager and ready to attack the snow each year. Still, if you limit your impression of Breckenridge only to the slopes, you’re missing out on a whole lot more. Believe it or not, Breckenridge is a perfect town for artists. Not only does the natural beauty of Breckenridge’s Ten Mile Range (and all that lies within it) certainly provide wonderful scenery for artists’ ideas, but the town also caters to inspiring and feeding creativity. Here are just a few ways to channel your inner artist while visiting Breckenridge:
Stop in for Quilting Supplies, Stay for Tea. If you think that the quaint Victorian shops on Main Street are charming, you’d better get inside and meet some of the shop owners. Look no further than Tea Time Quilting and Stitchery, a Main Street shop with a motto that claims it is “a place where warm friendships are formed.” On the south end of the street, this shop not only sells quality fabric, yarn, patterns, and quilts, but it even offers a large sewing room for guests to gather, sip tea, and create masterpieces. Knitting classes, groups, and drop-in sessions are part of the business here, so be sure to stop by and form new friendships over tea and yarn.
Get Inspired with the Arts District of Breckenridge. Beginning in 2001, the Arts District of Breckenridge was created with a goal of establishing an arts-based community in Breckenridge. By offering year-round workshops, the Arts District has certainly lived up to its mission. A small studio fee and a few supplies will grant your entry into a number of classes for all levels of skill and experience. From workshops in textiles, photography, themed painting, printmaking, and a host of other mediums, the Arts District feeds Breckenridge artists with the creativity they’re craving. A visiting artist also takes up residence at the town’s famous Tin Shop, holding open studio tours and guest workshops.
Take a Gallery Tour. Take a walk down Main Street and you’re sure to quickly spot an art gallery or two. Because there’s no better souvenir than local art work, you’ll want to reserve a day to stop in each gallery to find a perfect painting, photograph, or sculpture. For an entirely local collection, be sure to stop by the Speakeasy Art Gallery on South Harris, just off Main Street. Although the Speakeasy is a popular place for indie movies, its Art Gallery is the perfect spot to find a stunning collection of local artwork and jewelry.
Give the Kids a Turn. Spark an artistic creativity in your children with a trip to the Breckenridge Children’s Museum. There you’ll find the “Creation Station” which provides kids with a variety of arts, crafts, and recycled material so that they can create their own Breckenridge masterpiece. Or, take the whole family to “Ready, Paint, Fire,” a paint-your-own ceramics studio. They provide the ceramics, samples, paint, glaze, and even ideas, and you paint away to your heart’s content. In the end, they’ll fire and glaze your piece, sending you home with your unique piece of art.
Whether your visit to Breckenridge spans a weekend or a week, there’s always time to fit in a day of art. With hundreds of Breckenridge lodging deals within walking distance to historic Main Street, you can create and tour galleries all day long. Breckenridge is guaranteed to inspire the inner artists in all of us. So, grab your paint brush, knitting needle, or camera, and get to Breckenridge. Both the scenery and the resources await you.
