What is Caloric Expenditure?

Caloric Expenditure refers to the burning of calories.

The Importances of Caloric Expenditure

Calculating your caloric expenditure will greatly help with your nutrition and exercise plans. You will be able to properly adjust your caloric intake and exercise duration based on whether you are trying to gain, lose, or maintain bodyweight

Calculating Caloric Expenditure

These are the most common methods for calculating Caloric Expenditure:

  1. Indirect Calorimetry
  2. Formulas
  3. Calculators
  4. Charts

1) Indirect Caliorimetry

Indirect Calorimetry is a method of estimating energy expenditure based on CO2 production and O2 uptake. It is most commonly used in a clinical setting to get a reliable estimate of energy expenditure.

2) Caloric Expenditure Formulas

  • ISSA Formula
  • Total Daily Energy Expenditure
  • Thermic Effect of Exercise
  • VO2 to Calories Burned

3) Caloric Expenditure Calculators

Caloric Expenditure Calculators typically use one of the previously mentioned formulas to determine the calories you have expended. Always check to see which formula is used because each one has it's own accuracy.

4) Caloric Expenditure Charts

A quick and easy method for determining the amount of calories you burned during physical activity. The negative about charts is that they are mostly based on a standard body weight and/or size per gender.

Using Caloric Expenditure Charts

Daily Caloric Expenditure

This is the total amount of calories you consume in a day.

Thermic Effect of Food

Thermic Effect on Food (TEF) is the energy expended (calories burned) when an individual consumes and digest food. It's roughly 10% of the total amount of calories you consumed.

How many Calories should I Expend (burn)?

This is one of the most common questions in health and fitness. Unfortunately there is more math involved and a few more formulas. But after practice, you will be able to do this rather quickly.

The key is to determine how many calories you are currently burning through diet and exercise. Then you take that number (Daily Caloric Expenditure) and either add or subtract calories depending if you are trying to gain or lose weight.

Steps for determining how many calories to burn?

  1. Calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)
  2. Use one of the Caloric Expenditure formulas to determine how many calories you burned
  3. Add step 1 plus step 2 (BMR + Calories Expended)
  4. Now take that total and add 10% of your total calories consumed. This is better known as the Thermic Effect of Food (TEF).
  5. You now have your Daily Caloric Expenditure (BMR + step 2 + TEF)
  6. Now you just add or subtract calories to your Daily Caloric Expenditure. This depends on if you want to gain or lose weight.
