CAMERON HIGHLANDS
Cameron Highlands is located at a high ground, 5000 feet above sea level. Although a part of Malaysia which average temperature is about 34 c , it is much colder there, with the average temperature of 18 c.
Cameron Highlands is named after William Cameron who discovered the place back in 1885. Today the place is well known for its tea plantation, flower orchards, citrus fruits and fresh vegetables. It is also a tourist destination both local and from abroad due to its beautiful landscape, cool weather and panoramic view.
For accommodation, there are various to choose from. You can choose from hotels to motels, resorts and apartments. You can also stay at a luxurious hotels to the very reasonable bed and breakfast. Personally I would recommend the average priced accommodation because it would be a great loss if one were to stay locked up in a comfortable room and missed out on all the places to visit or paying for expensive hotel room just for showers and sleep. Be sure to book ahead if one plans to go there during the weekends or on Public Holidays.
Cameron Highlands is also known for its high quality tea leaves and in various flavour such as strawberry, apricot and mango. It is also recognized for producing world class tea leaves such as Boh Tea. I, however prefer the Blue Valley Tea.
This is also the place to gobble up strawberries. For those living in warm climate countries such as Malaysia, this is a treat indeed. This is a place where almost everything is about strawberry - fresh strawberries, strawberry juice, strawberries dipped in chocolate, cakes, dried ones, strawberry motif clothes and souvenirs, even strawberry flavoured cigarettes!
And the best place to get value for money fresh strawberries from, is MARDI - a government funded research and development centre for agriculture, located at Tanah Rata.
Till today, Cameron Highlands is protected from massive development. Don't worry though, hospitals, clinics, banks, postal service, bus station and government administrative complex are easily accessible at the heart of Cameron Highlands which is Tanah Rata (literally translated means flat land )
Amongst the places of interest:
a) the Orang Asli ( Malaysian aborigine ) settlements
b) Cactus Valley
c) Butterfly Garden
d) Bee Farm
e) Rose Garden
f) Sam Poh Tong the Chinese temple ( on the way to Cameron Highlands )
Equip yourself with cameras and video cams to preserve the memories of your wonderful stay in Cameron Highlands. I hope you'll havea good time when visiting my country.
