Techniques used in hypermiling can, and do, generate savings in fuel. Hypermilers who drive conventional vehicles can often match the mileage of an equivalent hybrid. What are the Techniques used in Hypermiling?
- Accelerate slowly or brake gently. Acceleration is a significant source of fuel waste. Driving like a rabbit by accelerating quickly and stopping suddenly wastes a lot of gas. Think about the road in front of you and plan for your stops.
- Reduce the amount of time spent idling. If you make a stop and know that you will be stoped for longer than just a minute, turn off your engine.

Some of the techniques used by hypermilers can be dangerous. Organizations such as “AAA” caution motorists about using extreme techniques. Hypermiling techniques such as cutting off the vehicles engine or coasting in neutral down the roadway, tailgating or drafting, rolling through stop signs and driving at erratic speeds are dangerous behaviors. Some of these techniques are also illegal.
So Is Hypermiling Right For You?
The goals of hypermiling can be a positive influence on drivers. However, use some common sense. Don't move your gear selector while moving down the road unless driving conditions dictate it. Coast by taking your foot off of the gas and only when traffic conditions will allow you not to become an obstacle to others on the road. Do not shut off your engine for any reason will traveling down the road. Follow other vehicles at a safe distance. Your life and the lives of others are worth more than saving a few cents per gallon. The best advice is to study these gas saving techniques and determine which ones work best for you.
