Can I justify the "smoking ban" on public places?

Yes, I can

Although I am a smoker myself, I can definitely understand why people want a smoking ban. It's a nasty habit (that's hard to get rid off). It stinks and not just a bit. The smell of tobacco will get deep into your clothes and stay with you all day or night. The smoke irritates your eyes, making them watery with a burning feeling. It gets to your throat as well. You'll start coughing and within a while your throat will be sore. And this is just what it does to normal, healthy people. One can imagine the hell that people with asthma and bronchitis must be going through when they're in the neighborhood of smokers. On top of that there's plenty of scientific evidence that passive smoking may damage one's health. So yes, I can absolutely support the right to be in a smoke-free area.

No, I can't

Let's face it: smoking is not against the law. It's not against the law to produce tobacco products. It's not against the law to buy tobacco products. And (except for smoke-free zones) it's not against the law to use tobacco products. Either you forbid smoking altogether or you allow it. And as long as it's allowed, I may smoke. I'm allowed to drink water. Water is - just like tobacco - not illegal and it may be consumed anywhere. So why should that be different for smoking? It's inconsistent.

If you (the government) don't want people to smoke, then forbid it. But no, the government (at least here in Holland) welcomes the tax that smokers pay and rather than forbidding smoking, they decided to frustrate smokers as much as they can.

Maybe we can compromise?

How hard can it be to compromise? In Holland we used to have smoking and non-smoking areas. And technology has advanced, there are plenty of solutions to get rid of smoke. You can see examples of them at airports, office buildings, etc. It's technically possible to create areas where one can smoke (which is not a crime) while in the mean time not creating any inconvenience for others. In the Netherlands the pro-smoking lobby had this slogan: "we can work it out together". Unfortunately that is not what the governments want. They don't want to work it out. They want to ban people who smoke without having to give up the taxes money that they bring.

Although I do not like smoking myself I am sure we can find a compromise like you say.  Maybe a smoking lounge for those who like to smoke at airports, etc.  The smoking sections we used to have here in Califrornia never really worked because the smoke would float straight across.  I remember when I was young in the eighties that people still smoked in McDonalds and it was a big deal when they instituted the non-smoking ban in restaurants.  Honestly I do get very sick when people smoke around me and I have to get away from the area so I can breath.  Creating an area for smokers would be very tricky.  However, as you said technology has advanced so I am sure architects could think of some great plans.

It's all a mtter of mutual consideration, as far as I'm concerned. Nobody should suffer from my smoking habit. That should be the first criterium. But I think that smokers today are treated as outlaws.

Yes that is true. I know people who smoke tell me that. Perhaps created lounges for smokers like in the days of the past would work. It is a tricky issue.

Like most tricky issues it's a matter of not wanting to go to extremes, I think.

Good points...what people dont understand is that this issue, once resolved either way, will serve as the springboard for the nanny state police to seek out other crusades..

If you mean that governments nowadays are patronizing, I couldn't agree more.

Well being a smoker for 10 years i know how hard it is to not be able to smoke in a place where you socialize. So with all these bans going into effect i was turned on to this company CROWN7 by a friend. They offer a smokeless cigarette that you can smoke in bars/restaurants not only that but you still get you nicotine fix and you dont smell like an ashtray. So this is one product i would def consider.www.CROWN7.com

A similar (maybe the same) product was introduced in the Netherlands, but our fine government decided that it has to pass the drug (as in medicine) regulations. So it has been taken off the market, awaiting the approval.
