Can You Potty Train a Bird?
67The answer to that question would be ‘Yes” you can potty train a bird. I know it may sound a little bizarre but with time and a little patience, it can happen.
Three years ago, I purchased my feathered friend and quickly realized that taking him out of the cage was going to be a problem. I would have him out for a few minutes and then the poop would hit the floor, the furniture, or me. I was seriously thinking about not taking him out at all. However, I didn’t think that would be fair.
I kept thinking what I could do. Then the thought came to me. I realized he knew when someone would pull into my driveway, he would say, “look at the birdie’s” when he would see a birdie, and he would say ‘truck” when a truck would go by the house. I taught him all of those things so why not try potty training. I was willing to try and it paid off.
I started by noticing what time I would take him out. Then, I would put him back in the cage when I thought he was going to go. Sure enough, after many times of doing this we both caught on. It's all about the body language.
When he would poop in his cage, I would give him a lot of praise and then give him one of his favorite treats. The entire process took probably a few days.
People are always amazed that he is potty trained. They are always in disbelief that they see him poop on command. I always have to let them know that they did see him poop on command. Then they just laugh.
