Can a good writer write about anything, or is passion a prerequisite to writing a good hub ?

A good writer can write about anything
Now this is quite a blunt statement. But face it; we've got enormous resources to get our information. If you have the time, you can go to the library, surf the internet, try to get in touch with experts, you name it.
Thing is that this takes time. Depending on the subject, it may require a lot of time and effort. But basically one should be able to get the material that makes a good hub.
Writing is mostly about getting the right words in the right sequence into the right sentences. The building blocks are already there. Be it in your mind or in some other form. ‘All' you have to do is present it to the reader in a pleasant manner.

A good writer can’t write about anything
We all know it. We've all witnessed it, probably more than just once. We've all read books, hub, articles and we've all seen presentations where our enthusiasm for a subject was triggered. Just because it was presented with so much ‘esprit'. And we all know that there are subjects we really like to explore and elaborate on. A passionate story will capture its audience and leave them with a glow. Heck, that's what we refer to as a good writer: someone who will raise your interest, catch your attention and keep it. Someone whose words will not let you go. The books that keep you up much too late, because after each page you'll think: "one more page and then I'll go to sleep".
This can only happen of the writer is passionate about the subject.
I bet you recognize this: some hubs will roll out of your keyboard without hesitation. You know exactly what you want to say and how you want to say it. Other hubs require more time, more smoothing, polishing, restructuring, rephrasing. Because your heart is not with the subject.
A writer should write about anything
I agree with Julie A. Johnson and others who have written hubs on writing. Writing requires practice. The more you write, the better you will get. And so, writing about anything will enhance your skills. Go on and answer each and every request here on HubPages. Do your research, use your imagination, your empathy, your creativity and write as much as you can. It will only help you improve.

A writer shouldn’t write about anything
I don't know about you, but HubPages has yet to enable me to quit my job and be a fulltime Hubber. I've got my work to do, a household to keep running, a daughter to take care of, a love life to maintain and a social life that needs my attention. And in the time that's left, I like to write. Among other things. There is no way that I can produce more than one or two hubs per day. So I have to make choices. Not that this is a time consuming and demanding process, but I do have to select what to write about and what not.
And like any other Hubber, I like to be read and I like my writings to be appreciated. So every once in a while I will just write a hub as a practice exercise, but in general I pick topics that ‘get me going'. Which is not a static list, by the way. It depends on the mood I'm in, the phase I'm in and the subjects that arouse my attention.
Back to the request
Have I answered this request sufficiently? One could say I didn't. After all, the request was a closed question, which in general demands a simple yes or no. Simple however, is a word I have to look up. Because I like to approach a subject from different angles and view points. I try to not draw conclusions, but rather have my readers draw their own.

You don't need passion if the Hub is of the textbook variety - you research it and give out the info. Anything else, I would say passion is a definite need be. At least a little! ;}
Thank you, Rod
Even for textbook, research-based hubs I think that those written with passion for the subject are easier and more fun to read than those without, Privateye
I'm with you on "read my work...PLEASE!", but 90% of your work is a great read for me. I like the way you played up all arguments, and I believe that a good writer can and should write about anything even though some things will carry more passion with them.
Thank you, talented_ink. I feel humbled by these words.
I agree, I too think that a good writer should be able to write about anything. However, as a reader I most often enjoy those writers that put in that extra bit of passion. So even though the work of the good, yet passionless writer will be good, the work of the passionate writer will in most cases be better, I think.
Very well written Ananta65. Oh my gosh, I have so much reading to do. I am going to stop and make a list, you are the last on the list. Till I get caught up. Again, Very Very well written. I love the ones that teach me how to do it better.
Thank you, Mizink. I know how time and all kinds of other issues stand in the way of catching up with reading (or wrting) *smile*
