Artists and writers can help us to get over someone

Living with a loss is what matters, and artists and writers show us the many different ways in which this can be done.

Psychoanalyst and author, Darian Leader explains how creatve works like poetry, drama and literature can help us get through sad times. They confirm our feelings. Yes, they are normal feelings we realize and we see other people have felt what we are going through. Artists respond to frustration and sadness - quotes, movies and poems show us the universal nature of loss. In other words show us how we all feel like crap when we breakup!

Famous quotes about breakups

There are some amazing quotes about breakups out there. They sum up how you feel as you go through the breaking up process.

Sometimes I wonder if men and women really suit each other. Perhaps they should live next door and just visit now and then.

Katherine Hepburn

How could I be sleeping with this peculiar man … Surely only true love could justify my lack of taste.

Margaret Attwood

There is a good way to breakup with someone and it doesn’t include a post-it.

Carrie, Sex and the City

I could feel tears brimming and sloshing in me like water in a glass that is unsteady and too full.
Sylvia Plath

Sometimes I think I’ll give up trying, and just go completely Russian and sit on a stove and moan all day.

Dorothy Parker

Sad Breakup Poems Speak to Us

There are some really beautiful sad breakup poems that can confirm our feelings. They almost seem too overdone when you're not sad, but when you're heartbroken they speak directly to you. Translations to Japanese poetry are particularly touching (and short!) and many operas have tragic lyrics that convert to wonderful poetry.

I Used Up This Body

I used up this body
longing
for one who does not come,
A deep valley, now,
what once was my heart.

Izumi Shikibu

The night has a thousand eyes,
And the day but one;
Yet the light of the bright world dies
With the dying sun.

The mind has a thousand eyes,
And the heart but one;
Yet the light of a whole life dies
When love is done.

Francis William Bourdillon

When you are bored of your breakup - watch a movie

Getting over breakups sucks!  And sometimes you get bored of yourself and need a break from all that thinking about your breakup and your ex.  So take a holiday - I recommend holding your own Wallowfest and watching a whole lot of sad movies. You get the release of crying, but about something other than your own situation.

I've listed some movies here that you can watch on Amazon's Video on Demand - but what others would you add?  Nothing like a good sob to make you feel better!
