Can the US afford to get involved in the situation in Georgia? Either way, should the US get involved?
62Should we get involved with Georgia
This will be a short hub. I just wanted to voice my opinion about the Georgia situation. They sent people to help us in the war. Their soldiers gave their lives in support of our army, so I feel we should get involved on Georgia's side. Russia will never be Pro-America no matter what they say. Right now all that we are doing is talking and trying to get all of the stuff to stop. I wish that would work. I am afraid if we get involved physically, it could case a world war. Russia is not one to back down. And they have friends. I pray this is settled with talks and that Russia stops. Georgia is a democracy and have always stood by us. I feel we should back them up since they did the same for us. But, I hate for it to lead to a war. The USA is always being watched. China wants to take Taiwan, Korea wants to take Japan. Taiwan and Japan are our friends. When those bully countries will see that we wont stand, they'll take the helpless countries that are our friends, and then we will be the only ones left for them to take. We have to take a stand at some point or we will be taken ourselves. It's just scary. But, we need to do what's right.

This is an interesting hub, and it's given me something to think about. I, too, have written a hub on this request. My feeling is that we would be asking for trouble if we get involved there, militarily. However, when I wrote that hub I was unaware that Georgia had helped us in Iraq. My suspicion is that if they did, the amount of aid they committed was less than the trouble we would create if we went toe-to-toe with the Russians on Georgia's behalf.
Ouch again... Is it just me or do we really need to stop being the world's police? We have A LOT of issues here on our own soil, but we have exposed ourselves so much when can we "politically" say we can't do more and still keep the standing in the world? Not that I think too many like us right now, Bush has done a great job getting the world to hate us while his pocket book fills...
I understand what all of you are saying. I, personally, I am afraid to take any physical action in this. The fact that they didn't send tons of their people to help us in the war is, well, they don't have alot of people. They are a small country. Like I said, I pray this is resolved through talks. I agree with PT that it will be a war if we do much. But, we don't want Russia controlling much more than they already do. They are NOT our friends. And I don't see this so much as being a police for the world so much as backing our friends. But, looking at the news today, it looks like we are just going to sit here while Russia marches to their capitol and overtakes them. So, I guess this whole point is mute. But, I do feel that we have to take a stand at some point against Russia and China and any other countries that have the power and want so badly to blow us off the face of the earth. I feel bad for the people in Georgia. They only wanted to be free. But, like PT says, if we had done something physically, we would be at war with Russia. I feel we need to pick our fights. One country I would say we need to physically intervene for is Isreal. We must back them at all cost. I pray and I mean PRAY that whoever is elected will have the backbone to stand where we need to stand. But, also not to get involved in places we shouldn't. This is such a hard thing. Our country is not what it was 20 years ago. And our people don't back our soldiers like they did in WWII. Off the subject, I wish our country could come together like they did back then and be one. Not a bunch of small groups everywhere. I feel we'd be in much better shape. Thank all of you for your comments. I respect them all. I do NOT want us in war. Also, I do not want us to let people run over us. Russia has 100 tanks headed for the capitol in Georgia as I type this. So, I'd imagine that deciding is we need to do something is not a question now. We aren't doing anything physically. Which may just be the smartest thing for us. Thanks again for your comments!! I hope y'all have a great day :)
Todays happenings in Georgia:
I think Georgia started this badly by attacking first, but we definitely can't involve in that one. Russia thinks America is helping Georgia so that it can place missiles against Russia. They are threatened by US presence in neighboring countries. Now US has missile system in Poland, which may be used against Russia easily if there is a world war in the future. Only diplomacy will work. We can't afford another war also, we already have a Trillion dollar debt.
There is a very scary truth about the Georgian situation. Get involved and you risk a nuclear war. Have you ever studied Russian history a bit deeper? You could have found out how the Russian leaders-dictators-tzars never hesitate to sacrifice anything for their idea...anything. 1 life doesn't mean the same in Russia as it means in the USA. 1 million lives doesn't represent a lot in Russia for its leadership, but a million lives in the USA is a totally different story...and we could continue... American involvement in Russia is a direct provocation of that 'old Russian bear' to show off its power and its wounded national pride. With Putin in charge one could exactly predict the result of any escalation in Georgia. Russian leadership has been additionally provoked by NATO/American installation of anti-missile systems at Russian border in Poland and Czech Republic. As much as I know Russia, that will not mean anything positive for the world...and yes, Russian strategic bombers, ships and submarines have already started to deliver military help' to Cuba, Venezuela, Iran, Syria, etc. Well, that was an official start of the Cold War II. How very sad!
Solar, thanks for taking your time to post on my hub. You have great points. Russia doesn't feel about their people like we do here. Which to me is very sad. Because that means they would sacrifice their people for practically no reason. I do not want a war. In fact, I hate war. But, I know that as long as the world stands, wars will go on. I feel we should pick our fights. And Russia is a bad one to be invovled with. I do feel we should stand up for ourselves and those who stand with us if at all possible. War is a scary business. About NATO, I know you didn't ask, but I am anti-NATO. I feel they will get us in more trouble than help. I wish we weren't a part of it. It feels like it's just a governing body which tell us what we can do or not do. I wish we were more independent in so many ways that we aren't. Thank you again for your comment. Please come back to any of my hubs anytime.
cgull8m, Thank you for commenting on the hub. I feel that Georgia was only trying to keep their independence from Russia. (Wouldn't you want that?) Which I can't blame them for. If they felt their independence was threatened, I can see why they would do what they did. I wouldn't want to be under Russian oppression. Thank you for commenting.

It's a mess. But I think we spurred Georgia to attack. We currently have 2 carriers in the Persian Gulf. Last week, the US, France, and England completed war games in the Atlantic - and a huge flotilla is now on its way to the Gulf as well. Our intention is to blockade Iran (an act of war).
This article below, from a Liberal site - details what they think is a very dangerous strategy. The root of all the wars and this incursion - is really to determine - who controls the majority of the world's oil and oil routes. The argument for both sides is difficult.

And here is a map of GUUAM - the 5 nation bloc backed by the US which includes Georgia. (The clickable map is at the bottom) With NATO up to the Western border of Russia, and GUUAM in infancy to the south - Russia feels very pressured to strike back. They can not allow to be without control of the oil in an area they have controlled for 100's of years.
Should we back Georgia?? It depends on how big a war you want.
