The controversy surrounding China, Tibet, at the Olympics
56China, as most of us know, recently opened its doors to the world in the past decade or so. Before that, there was much oppression within. They upheld communism such that children at an early age are being oriented with communism. That was how their population was being governed. Tibet did not accede to all of that as they had a spiritual head, the Dalai Lama. The Tibetans have their faith in Buddhism led by the Dalai Lama, who was in exile in India with some other Buddhists, after the 1959 occupation of the Chinese. The Chinese saw them as a rebel territory and limited the development of Tibet. I believe that the art of self-defense and unarmed combat was developed by the Buddhist monks to protect themselves from the Chinese. Tibet is also being related to Mongolia as Kublai Khan, grandson of conqueror Genghis Khan, gave audience to the Tibetans. This developed close ties between the two groups which, I believe, China resents. That's the issue between Tibet and China.
That issue between Tibet and China gave rise to the Olympics controversy with some participating countries wanting China to ease off Tibet. The issue is being raised by human rights activists of these countries. China has a grappling hold on Tibet and some of other minorities. Many crackdowns by Chinese authorities have been made on these minorities. Some were alleged to be some untoward activities by the minorities on the Olympics. The move of the human rights activists is simple. They know China spent a fortune for the Olympic events since 2001. They could pressure China into agreeing to provide better human rights to the minorities so that China will still gain from their Olympics projections.
