Best Known Online Literary Journals

With the advent of cyber space, new venues opened for both writers and readers of good literature. Although the number of online literary journals must number in the thousands, there are a few that remain at the top, featuring quality fiction and poetry.

While many online journals or 'zines come and go, the top echeleon of journals have been constant over several years.

As a writer - and a reader - these are my top picks for online literary journals. Some have published my work and while others have not, I often submit to these journals and I always read them.

Storysouth is one of the best known literary online journals. Jason Sanford publishes quality fiction, poetry, and non-fiction that has some tie to the Southern United States. Sanford is also the annual sponsor of the Million Writers Award, a prize that showcases some of the best literary work online today.

small spiral notebook is another top rated online literary journal. small spiral notebook now offers both a print and online version but they publish some of the most outstanding new voices in literature today.

The Rose And Thorn Literary E-zine is another place to find quality short fiction. Competition among writers to find publication here is fierce and the result is excellent reading material in each online issue.

Foliate Oak, the online literary journal hosted by the University of Arkansas at Monticello, also features up savvy, satisfying, often thought provoking literature for their online readers.

The Pedestal Magazine is not just popular among those who love literature but they have also gained a reputation for publishing outstanding literary work by new and old voices. With well-earned prestige, this is a clip that any writer would be delighted to add to their resume.

Blackbird is an online journal of literature and the arts from the Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia.

Other well established, well read online literary 'zines include Coyote Wild, The Chick Lit Review, Mosaic Minds, Poor Mojo's Almanac, Word Riot, Web del Sol,Outsider Ink, Lone Star Stories, and Zoetrope.

These are but a few of the many online literary venues. Some of my favorites that are no longer online also included The Dead Mule School of Southern Literature; Dragonfire (Drexel University) and Scrivener's Pen.

Increasing numbers of literary prose will appear in the future in these and other top literary online journals.
