Cancer: What is Known About Reducing the Risk
42The anticancer armamentarium
The analogy of cancer growth and the growth of weeds is one used by David Servan Schreiber, M.D. author of "Anticancer". In the book he describes how he was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor and sought to discover what could be done to reduce his risk of recurrence after surviving not one, but two bouts with the disease. Not surprisingly, there are many foods, spices and herbs which can help one stay cancer-free including green tea, turmeric, soy, tomatoes, cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, kale, brussel sprouts), onions, garlic, and berries, among others. Some of these foods like broccoli, contain compounds which directly fight cancer by causing the body to produce enzymes that kill cancer cells. One such compound is sulforaphane, which is especially abundant in broccoli sprouts. Green tea and white tea contain EGCG which can also destroy cancer cells. Onions and garlic contain sulfur-containing compounds which can block the formation of nitrosamines in the stomach. Berries contain ellagic acid which also has anticancer activity. Ellagic acid is especially plentiful in black raspberries. Turmeric contains curcumin which is anti-imflammatory as well as a powerful inhibitor of certain types of cancer. Soy isoflavones may block estrogen receptors which otherwise might be occupied by xenoestrogens (environmental estrogen-like chemicals) which are cancer-promoting.
