Intestinal Yeast infection

I became ill with what doctor's at first thought was chronic fatigue syndrome. I had several trips to emergency room, with time then spent admitting me into the hospital, after it was learned that my white blood cell count was much higher than normal.

Countless test's indicated that there was nothing wrong with me. They did every blood test they could and still were unable to tell me what was wrong. They would have me "hooked" up to IV fluids, and antibiotics for an infection. At one point, I was hospitalized for 9 days while doctors tried to work out what was wrong and too, get my white cell count down to normal. On day nine after being on the IV the doctor came in to say that they were releasing me. They managed to get get white cell's not to nomral levels but close. I was then instructed to see my primary care physician and have my white cells count tested yet again.

I went to my doctor and explained my symptoms yet again. I was basically feeling very very weak. There were many times i felt nauseated and overall I told him, "I just feel like I have the flu all the time". My doctor tested my white cell count once again and it was much higher than normal, as usual.

It dawned on me just then that, my brother had been very ill a few years earlier. He sick for over 18 months with what was called, "intestinal yeast Infection". I told my doctor about this and how my brother had the same sort of symptoms. After exhausting all other possibilities, he had me to a "stool sample" test. (In intestinal yeast, they are most often able to diagnose after examining the levels of yeast in your stool.).

The test reflected very high levels of yeast in my intestines. (an over-growth). We all have to a cetain degree yeast in our intestines. But an over growth can cause some serious problems if it then perferates the wall of your intestines and enters your blood stream.

Most often doctors either can not or will not diagnose this right away. I was told over the year I was ill with it, that I had everything from a unknown viral infection to chronic fatigue. At one point my white cell count went so high they thought I might have leukemia! That was scary!

Once finding out what was wrong, I had to immediately change my whole diet. I had to stop eating anything which contained yeast for starters. I then ate yogurt with "live active cultures". The bacteria in yogurt is the good kind which "eats" yeast. My doctor then prescribed to me medications to try and kill the yeast.

There are, though some websites may tell you otherwise, there are antibiotics that specifically target yeast. Though it is extremely important that you try the natural alternatives first. And remain in constant contact with your doctor regarding your condition.

The symptoms vary from person to person. I had a wide range of symptoms. But nothing they could specifically say was wrong or what was causing my symptoms. Below is a list of some of the more common and some less common symptoms associated with an Intestinal Yeast Infection:

  • High white blood cell count (with no clear sign from your doctor as to what is causing the increase)
  • fluctuating blood cell count (with no clear sign from your doctor as to what is causing the fluctuation)

**Blood test's do not detect this type of infection** So, if you have been told you have a high white cell count or it fluctuates, and you are having symptoms, you may want to ask your doctor for a "stool sample test". These tests can determine how much yeast is in your system. Most often a high concentration of yeast in the sample is a clear indication of an intestinal yeast infection**

  • chronic Fatigue
  • weakness
  • nausea
  • flu like symptoms
  • dizziness
  • a feeling of being light headed
  • lack of concentration or focus
  • Depression
  • anxiety

**In some cases when the yeast has grown through the wall of your intestine you experience much worse symptoms as the infection can and does spread to organs upon entering your blood stream. In this case, which is severe, immediate medical attention is required.

Below are some natural alternatives that are safe if you or your doctor suspect you have an Intestinal Yeast Infection:

  • Change Your Diet... Avoid eating sugars, products containing yeast, high fat or fried foods
  • Start a "yogurt regimine" eat lots of yogurt that contain "live active cultures" **I drank, "DanActive" a yogurt drink supplement, atleast 4 times a day along with eating other yogurt products.
  • Try starting a hobby or excercise program to relieve stress. **It is believed that high levels of stress can bring on an over growth of yeast.
  • Do your research! I "googled it" plus you can do research if your doctor is willing, with him/her about intestinal yeast otherwise known as, Candida Albicans of the intestines.

AW, Having encountered you in the forums, I pondered the unlikelihood that we might agree on anything. So I decided to peak at your hub list and found this jewel.

It’s an important story. I’m glad you told it. This is obviously a frustrating condition. In my experience and research, most providers are woefully unaware of it. You were lucky to get a provider to pursue it. BUT only after a leukemia scare! If I could say a few things to the Western medicine world of MDs, one would be: Patients do not enjoy being sick. We want to be diagnosed and treated sub-clinically. We do not want to be so sick, as would be suggested by the white count of someone with leukemia.

I’m glad you included natural or self treatment options, because the sad reality is, even if a patient feeds the diagnosis to their doc on a silver platter, they will likely still be blown off, with a note in their file about their multiple psychiatric issues. Please explore Donna Gates’ Body Ecology website. The site and her Body Ecology Diet book might be a good link for your piece.

Respectfully, Rose Mary

LOL I am just laughing at how right you are in the beginning statement here. But too really, I do not want to disagree or be disagreeable with you. I think you are from what I can tell as I read, a nice person.

And even though we may disagree from time to time in the forums, I want you to know that I do not take our arguements as a sign of who you really are. Meaning, some people disagree though they really like eachother as people regardless.

A difference of opinion on any subject should not then be subject to ones true character.

I know at times it may appear that I am over bearing or non-caring. But truth be told, I am just very opinionated. :)

I hold strong to my convictions as I am sure you do as well. But I do try to and succeed more often than not at getting along very nicely with people.

I do have friends, though this is off topic with this hub, But I do have friends who are gay and do voice themselves as having made a choice in it. BUT, I also have gay friends who state they believe as well, that they were not given a choice in it. So I see both sides of it very clearly. I just tend to agree with the other side of that aisle.

Having said that, my friends who disagree with me on that tend to not bring that debate up. Neither to eachother as some of them disagree on it. Neihter side is about to cave, so we choose rather to agree that we disagree and leave it at that.

I think too, that is where you and I can come together on. :)

I thank you for your nice comments about my illness. Yes it has been a frightening journey at times. But I trust God to get me through it all.

Respectfully, Amy :)

Thanks for your candor Amy. There are definitely discussions that my aunts have come to avoid at family dinners: "shh, don't get her started". (Usually things like racial issues. They're Southerners...)

I'm very opinionated as well, but 20 years as an Air Force officer taught me some restraint.

Back to your hub, I think you should write more on this topic. I have lots of resources, but thyroid issues and alternative medicine are more my passion topics.

See you around HP!

thanks Rose Mary! :)

and I am sorry if I over stepped my bounds and came off sounding less than christian to you or anyone for that matter. That was not my intention at all,

Sincerly.
