Barcode Handbag - Coiner Pouch

I was internet surfing the other night and came across an interesting idea, recycled paper waste. The product is Candy Wrapper Handbags. This is what I found....These original, one-of-a-kind handbags are made from repurposed candy wrappers, soda labels, billboards, and other food packages that have been discarded by manufacturers due to misprints, overages, or discontinued candy lines. Instead of having the wrappers end up in landfills, they are used as raw material to make handbags.

The handbags originated in Mexico by a woman named Olga Abadi. A frequenter of the cultural festivals near her hometown in Mexico, it was here that Olga discovered the ancient Mayan technique of binding everyday materials into handbags. The result is Nahui Ollin, a specialty line of handbags inspired by age-old techniques with a modern look and feel.

The bags are entirely handmade by folding and weaving individual candy wrappers together to create the various shapes and sizes. Even though the handbags are made from candy wrappers, they stand up to the test of time and weather for a tear-free durability.

I found a blog where it shows you how to make a candy wrapper handbag, www.candywrapperpurse.blogspot.com. I'm sure it's very time consuming to make a handbag.

Prices range from a coin purse selling for $20.00 to a large portfolio selling for $188.00. They are not cheap but neither are designer handbags.

Another site I found www.ecoist.com works with a tree oganization that plants a tree every time Ecoist sells a handbag.

What a concept "an innovative product that's environmentally friendly". I found a website that sells jewelery made from recycled material too. I guess that will be another hub.

Wow, it's been a long time since I've seen candy wrapper chains. Who knew you could make purses out of them. Very neat!

I remember candy wrapper chains! How extremely cool that anyone would turn their hand to making something useful and cute, maybe lovely?, from something we generally run arcoss as annoying litter (with children around anyway). People are amazing.

I've also hear of the candy wrapper handbags as well, and it's a awesome idea and very creative. I think if I were to try and make one I'd be looking for a Jenny Craig because someone would have to eat ALOT of candy.

I have seen hand bags made out recycled paper and duct tape but not candy wrapers... Excellant way to go "green". Very cool!!

These bags are really exciting and believe it or not...they're actually simple to create. (and addictive!) I wanted to buy one for my girlfriend but then I saw the prices and though otherwise (more like my eyes popped out when I saw the price!...haha). I was determined to learn how to make one and I figured out how to make one just like the women in Mexico (and for less than $5....way less than the $150 price tags you see everywhere)

People asked me how I did it so I ended up making a step-by-step video showing everyone how to do it. It's really not that hard once you understand how to do it. I put up a quick video about it on my blog if you want to check it out...

Have fun making one...these bags are awesome!
