Canidae Dog Food Review:
I liked the listing for this product. I did have trouble finding this product at stores near me. The nearest source was over an hour away and not carried by many stores. I wish more pet foods took pride in their products like this one.
Keep in mind that the purchase price of a product doesn't reflect the feeding cost of a product. It takes much less of a quality food (like this one) to maintain a healthy pet.
Other pet foods are loaded with corn and other grains. These grains are cheap fillers companies use to cut down on production costs and to keep your dog coming back to the dinner plate to eat. Think of grains as a jar of cotton balls with a couple of nibbles of real meat tossed in. A dog has to eat all those cotton balls to get what his body really needs ... the meat. Cotton balls are cheap to use and since he is only getting a small amount of what his body needs he'll always be hungry and will consume much more of a poor product than of a good quality product. Of course, most pet foods aren't made with cotton and this was meant only as an example.
When you feed your dog a pet food made of only the things his body needs he should eat only about 1/4 of the amount.
If the messy stools are a problem when changing to a quality dog food give him a big spoon full of pumpkin in his food. This should really help him.
Corn, Wheat, and Soy are the worst grains to feed. These three grains cause fever, ear aches and infection, bloating, kidney and liver inflamation, tumors, moles, bad breath and dental disease, hair loss, poor nail growth, blindness, deafness, heart conditions, and early death.
Please read the feeding instructions for your size of dog and his age. Work from there.
Do you have another dog or cat food you would like to have tested? Please submit a comment and I'll check it out.

I don't understand how Canidae could have received only a half a point out of a possible two points for corn. They don't use corn in their food.
I use the Canidae all life stages for all my dogs and pups, this is an excellant food. All dogs love it their coats are beautiful.
I am a new boxer owner. I have done a lot of research on dog food and would recommend Canidae to any one. All of the meat ingredients are meat meal. It has no corn, wheat or by-products of any kind. It is also very reasonably priced. A 40# bag works out to $.50 a cup. Some of the other lower grade foods full of junk and more expensive. The product is made in the USA. I'm hoping that more consumers will use this product! I know I will.
Dogqueen,
Great review. Thank you for sharing some very important facts.
Susan
We have 4 dogs and they have been eating CAnidae for about 2years and were doing really well. We recently bought a new bag this past week and our oldest became extremely sick and is still in the hospital. The vet is not sure what is wrong but she has abnormal liver functions. Her symptoms are vomitting, diarreha, extreme lethargy and last night the other three have started vomiting and have diarehha. We dont give any other dog treats and only feed Canidae I am desperate to know if anyone has heard anything very recent about this brand?
Anesie,
I have not heard of anyone else complaining about this brand of food until now. What you have described sure sounds like everything I've been hearing about the the other brands. Please keep me posted. If there does turn out to be trouble with this food I want to pass the information along to my readers.
Susan
I love the way Canidae started to clear up my English Bulldogs tear stains around the eyes and nose wrinkle. HIs coat looked great even helped with his skin allergies. But, I notice a little weight loss and seriouse diarrhea the entire time I was using Canidae. Does anyone know why it's giving him diarrhea ???
And boy does it smell.......
Brandy,
Did you change his diet all at once? I'm thinking maybe it was a bit rich for him to start out with. I'm not sure what would cause the messy poo.
Hmmm,
Susan
Canidae is also awesome because it's for "all life stages," meaning they don't buy into the puppy-food-has-to-have-more-fat-content myth. Worlds above most of the commercial foods out there.
Great hub!
Helen,
Thanks for the insight!
Susan
I have been using Canidae for the last 6 months, and have a dealer only 6 miles from me (Thank God). The product is great, I have 5 dogs and 2 have allergies which cleared up. I also have 2 overweight dogs and 3 that are not, so with this food, I am able to feed them all just varied the amounts. With the holidays, my dealer was closed and I ended up buying "The good life recipe" at a store to hold me over. The dogs LOVED it. After reading the review on here (thank you Susan) I know why..who doesn't love McDonalds or Burger King (bad for you, but it tastes good because of all the fat and calories). You can't live off Fast Food.
Joe,
Your observations are correct. I have learned a lot about the quality of food (both human and animal) and the effects of the food on health.
When I finish writing all the pet reviews I am going to concentrate on people food reviews. I personally have lost over 75 pounds (having 15 to go) by cutting out preservatives from my diet. I eat what ever calories I wish, deserts daily, etc. I was eating healthy "South Beach" frozen dinners and gaining weight like mad.
I'm glad you are back on track with your dog food. You'll know to stock up for Chiristmas, huh?
Susan
I have fed my three dogs Canidae for five months. All was great and then they started having excessive gas and runny stools about 3-4 weeks ago. I thought they had something and gave their stomachs a break from food for a day. Everything seemed normal and I put them back on Canidae and my oldest dog got very ill over the next three days and the other two had gas again. The older dog bloated and had lifesaving surgery...but died 3 days after the surgery. I cannot prove it was the dogfood but it seems very suspicious. My two remaining dogs are back on another brand of food and off Canidae and they have been fine.
Patti,
Thanks for the heads up. Should you happen to know of anyone else having trouble please let us know.
Sorry for your loss,
Susan
I have a American Pit Bull Terrier that is allergic to the food he is eatign now(Purina Dog Chow) and I am thinking of putting him on Canidae. He has itched off a lot of hair on his back legs, do you think it would help and make his hair look normal again?
Amy,
Remove the corn from his diet and his hair will return to a non-sticky state, the itching will stop, the weight gain will end, and his personality will return.
The answer is, Yes!
Susan,
I just switched my 4 month old bichon puppy dog food 3 times now and I am not sure if I have found the right dog food for my precious one. First, he was on royal canin and his poop smelled terrible; did not like that very well. Then, I switched him to AvoDerm and he did not like that at all. Went back to the store and bought a Nutro Natural Choice. My dearest Feary did not like it at all. Then lastly, I had just purchased a Canidea two days ago along with some dog can food (Chicken) flavor that will entice him to eat. My Feary loves the taste of it although he has been having diarrehea all day. Do you think mixing the dry food with alittle wet food is causing the diarrehea. And also, I am not sure if I am feeding him too much. I have been feeding him 3 times a day.
Jocelyn,
Royal Canin and Nutro have a history of pet food recalls, pet illness, and pet death associated with the use of their products. So many, infact, there is a Class Action filed against these companies. Feary seems to have known these products were substandard.
You told me that you purchased canned food to make your Bichon eat. Was the canned food Canidae? Why would you want to push your little guy to eat more than he wishes? Is he under weight and too thin?
The other foods you mentioned were loaded with corn and other grains. These grains are cheap fillers companies use to cut down on production costs and to keep your dog coming back to the dinner plate to eat. Think of grains as a jar of cotton balls with a couple of nibbles of real meat tossed in. Feary as to eat all those cotton balls to get what his body really needs ... the meat. Of course, most pet foods aren't made with cotton and this was meant only as an example.
When you feed Feary a pet food made of only the things his body needs he should eat only about 1/4 of the amount.
If the messy stools don't clear up soon give him a big spoon full of pumpkin in his food.

Susan
SusanPeters,
Thank-you for your advice. I have decrease the serving on his food. Feary has not had any diarrehea all day. As a matter of fact, his stool is hardening now. So far so good. I will eliminate the wet food that I am adding into his dry food. Hopefully, Feary will get used to eating his Canidae without adding anything in it. Thank-you once again and I hope to hear from you again.
Jocelyn,
Great report! Thanks for keeping me updated. Please let me know how he does on Canidae it is always nice to hear reports from people using different pet foods.
Like a baby scrap book - keep us up to date.

On March 22, 2008, My fiancee took home a three weeks old, 3lb daschund, and she doesn't seem to be drinking very well. Petsmart told me to feed her royal canin and the problem I'm having is her poop smell terribly, its a very loose poop that has a clear thick mucus. Is this something I should be concern about? I also tried giving her esbelac powder milk which she refuse to drink. Please help on what to do. This is my first dog experience.
Hi Susan,
My dearest Feary is doing well from time to time. At times, he refuses to eat and looks forward someone to give him table food. Overall, he is doing well with Canidea. Right now, he is about 10 lbs and a very happy puppy. Thank-you.
Jocelyn
Jocelyn,
I'm glad for the happy report!
Susan
Char,
PetSmart directed you in a manner which will kill your dog. No corn, wheat, or soy of any kind in your dog's pet food.
Remove the hazardous grains from your dog's food and all should be normal. No more smelly poop or digestive problems. Given a grain free, healthy diet your new puppy should live 30 years or more.
Susan
Hi Susan,
What kind of food do you suggest for a three weeks old, 3lb daschund? I bought a esbelac powder milk and a puppy bottle for feeding but all she does is bite on it, she doesnt know how to suck it. I also put atleast 4oz of milk in her drinking bowl but she hardly drink it. However she is playful and loves to bite things and she also sleep alot.
Char
Char,
Did her mother die? Why do you have to care for a 3 week old puppy? Chances of survival grow greater as the days pass by but to be honest with you I think you should visit with the vet about the milk issue.
As for the food. You should feed a puppy food with a score of 10/10. I don't know what is available in your area so you will have to look through the pages to find something which suites you.
http://hubpages.com/hub/Pet_Food_Ratings
As for sleeping, your puppy just got it's eyes open for the first time a couple of weeks ago. He's a new baby and will sleep a lot for a while. Why was he taken from his mother?
Susan
My 1 1/2 yr old German Shepherd was just diag. with EPI. She is currently eating Iams Lamb and Rice. She likes it and eats well 2x a day with 2 tabs crushed Viokase V on the food. Is there any food that is low fat low fiber with no grain? I have been told she would do better on that kind of food. I need to get some weight back on her also. Thanks for all your help.
Ronda & Zarina
Ronda,
No corn, wheat, or soy. These three grains will kill your dog and cause a number of other problems along the way. Change to a pet food which does not contain these three grains and your problems will be greatly reduced if not gone all together. Look for a 10/10 rating. I don't know what foods are available in your area so I don't know what to suggest.
http://hubpages.com/hub/Dog_Food_Review
As I am sure you know Iams has Class Actions filed against the company due to the large number of pet deaths associated with feeding Iams products.
Susan
I have a co-op for Canidae dog food and they have recently had a price increase. I buy Wholesale so I get a very good price but they went up quite a bit. One of my co-op gals is looking at changing to Nature's Select Super Premium Dog Food. Do you know anything about it? I know they deliver, can't be bought in stores. I looked it up on the web but I am not good an trying to figure out which is a better dog food.
Laulow,
Nature's Select looks to be fairly ok. I looked at only one style (I'll write full reviews as quick as I can get to them) and I saw what looked like beer run screenings. The stuff in the bottom of the barrel after beer production. I'll check into this further.
Susan
Thanks Susan! I appreciate you taking the time to look at it. When you get the chance if Canidae is the better dog food, please let me know and the reasons why so I can pass this on to her. She has a lot of Weimer's so I know she wants to feed them good food, but wants to get a good price as well, which I have been able to provide.
Laurie
Laurie,
Canidae must be near the same brewery! LOL I'd say they are both on about the same level. I'll check into this deeper when time allows.
Susan
Laurie,
I'm working on the Nature's Select Super Premium Dog Food Reviews now. http://hubpages.com/hub/Natures-Select-Super-Premi
Susan
Rhonda!
PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT SUPPORT IAMS. Spread the word, so many people do not know or care to know that there dog food companies do VERY CRUEL ANIMAL testing.
Is there any truth to Canidae having acetominiphen in there food, looks like there is testing going on to see if some of the food has been contaiminated??? Please let me know, although it is safe for dogs in low dosage, it is not for my kitty or often sneaks a piece of Canidae.
Krissee,
I have been told by very reliable sources the rumor is truth. I've read reports stating such and I believe this is the basis of a law suit as well.
Susan
I was wondering how much this food costs.
Mich,
I have included information about the cost of this food on this page. Look just above the comments area for a listing of different sizes and their costs.
Susan
Krissie,
I sent a note to Canidae asking them about the acetominiphen reports. Here is the response I got back:
We received unconfirmed information that a particular laboratory that tested a sample of dog food submitted by a consumer reported that the sample was positive for acetaminophen at the limit of detection of 1 part per million. The consumer identified the dog food as a Canidae product and provided to us the lot number of that product. We submitted samples from the same lot to an independent laboratory for testing. The independent laboratory could not detect any acetaminophen in the product down to the same level of 1 part per million. We also submitted to the independent laboratory a sample from a second lot and it was negative as well. We do not believe that Canidae pet products contain any acetaminophen and are confident that that there is no safer or more nutritious pet food available today.
Mary
I have a few questions for you. I just read on another dog blog site that Candidae has changed their formula, and people are having problems with it - it makes their dogs throw up and gives them diarrhea. Since the formula has changed, could you post a new/revised review?
Second, I've been feeding my puppy, who is a wolf hybrid, Natural Life Lamaderm for Puppies (dry). She does great on it, but I could't find a review, and some of the other Natural Life reviews were not so good. But Lamaderm is especially for dogs with allergies, so there's no wheat, soy or corn in it. Could you maybe review it? The same goes for the Lamaderm adult formula.
And finally: I've heard good stuff about Rachael Ray's dog food line, but have not found reviews.T
Thanks, much appreciated!!!
Michela, I gradually switched all 6 of my dogs from Iams to Lamaderm and it's giving them TERRIBLE gas and my pups have had loose stool. i don't feed a lot, so it's not the overfeeding that's doing it... have you experienced this problem?
i am sad because i thought i found the perfect food...
No, I do not have that problem with the Lamaderm Puppy food. My dog never has gas or loose stool, and she also never stinks (another nice benefit when feeding healthier food). I always thought Lamaderm Puppy food was one of the better foods. I'm really mostly happy with it, except I know it has fillers in it (forget which ones) - so I'm thinking about switching my dog to Wellness Super 5 Mix instead. It's also time to switch her to adult food anyways.
canidae is an amazing food i couldnt be happier with it for the price and quality there is nothing on the market like it! i would recommend this to anyone that ask's about it. my dogs love canidae als and also the new canidae grain free als which by the way is relatively new.
I'm did my research on Canidea. is anyone else aware that this food is produced in the same factory that makes Diamond pet foods?? From my understanding Diamond has been in several recalls. Even though I like the ingredient list in Canidea how can i trust it if its made in Diamonds facility???
I "upgraded" my 2 dogs dry food to Canidae lamb/rice All Stages. I did it gradually over 3 weeks but they both still suffered from serious yellow smelly pudding pooh. They started to stabilize once the bag was done so I bought a second one and now we are back to square 1. After all I have now read I will immediately discontinue use!

Wow! Look what one of my readers had to say, I receved this review through e-mail. I couldn't have given a better review.
I feed Canidea dry and I free feed - I know not recommended -but my dogs maintain weight and don't over feed. Recently I have had to take care of my mom's dog who is over weight, since my mom insists the dog won't eat unless her dry is mixed with wet. This dog has been in my care for three weeks and is losing weight with Canidea and NOT overeating! I have also noticed a high energy level in my mom's dog since I have had her with me. I have a stud and a feamle show dog Two spayed females a nuetered male and my mom's dog is also spayed. All these dogs like the taste of Canidea and have no ill reactions to it - I agree it is hard to find - in my area I can only find it at a chain called Concord Pet Supply. Sometimes even my local store sells out and I have to travel to another store to pick it up.
