- Canobie Lake Park
Check out all the excitement!
As a high-schooler, "Wanna go to Canobie Friday night?" was synonymous with, "You ready for practice?"
It was the place to be. It was fun, relatively inexpensive and a great date. Canobie Lake Park in Salem, NH is not only a teen hotspot, it is also a family establishment that provides entertainment for people of all ages.
Named for the neighboring body of water, Canobie Lake Park was established in 1902 and originally offered limited attractions including a botanical garden, picnics, an arcade, and canoeing. The park's main purpose was to attract traffic to their trolley car business.
I have been there countless times, known people who have worked there, and will undoubtedly find my way back there sometime in the future. Canobie Lake Park is continuously growing and finding ways to keep people coming.
Famous for it's old and rickety roller coaster, the park boasts over 85 rides. Let us take a peek into some of the main attractions at Canobie Lake Park.
Yankee Canonball
Wrapping around the parking lot is Canobie's famous Yankee Cannonball roller coaster. It is an old, wooden, and seemingly unstable white roller coaster that has been in operation since 1936!
It takes you on several climbs and descents tossing your stomach into your throat. Flying around each corner will cause you to hang on for your life as if you were going to fall out.
It is obviously safe, or they wouldn't be able to run it, so if you get the chance, don't pass up this ride. The lines will surely be long, but it is worth it to ride on a piece of history!
The Turkish Twist
Why anyone likes this ride is beyond me. I have been on the Turkish Twist a handful of times, and it is equally unpleasant each and every time.
With your back against the wall, the room begins to spin...faster...and faster. Suddenly the floor falls from beneath your feet and you are suspended against the wall (due to some force called inertia or something like that).
The concept is pretty cool, but the force on your chest and face is too much. It literally pained me to get through this ride. Maybe I'm just weak, but I don't think that's it.
Oh, and don't forget...you are spinning the whole time at a high speed...if you are lucky enough to ride the Turkish Twist, I hope that you do so on an empty stomach!
Corkscrew
The Corkscrew is a bright yellow, short roller coaster which is appropriately named for its upside down corkscrew-like fall.
Undoubtedly one of the more popular rides at Canobie Lake Park, the Corkscrew whips you around at high speeds. Innovative in its time, the upside-down twist that the ride offers is a thrill and makes the ride worth waiting for.
Although it is a short and fast ride, it is so exhilarating that multiple rides in a row is not uncommon.
Pirata
More commonly known as the Pirate Ship, this ride is a Canobie Lake classic. With a part down the center of the ship, two groups of riders sit facing each other in restaurant booth like seats.
Once everyone has been strapped in the ship begins to sway like a pendulum. Slowly but surely the ship's speed increases and so does its height. Before long you will be staring straight down at the ground, and then straight up at the sky.
It is a great feeling to feel the air rushing at your face as you swing downward. Not so much the weird sensation in your stomach however....guys, you know what I'm talking about!
Boston Tea Party
The Boston Tea Party is sort of like the big brother to the Log Flume. Before the addition of Castaway Island, the Boston Tea Party was Canobie Lake Park's largest and most drenching water ride.
Serving only one purpose, this ride is designed to get people wet! Riders will undoubtedly be soaked to the bone after heading down the vertical drop. Likewise, onlookers standing on the bridge or anywhere near the ride will also get splashed pretty heavily!
This ride is perfect on a hot summer day. There is no better way to cool off than to get covered in cold water. The lines are always long, so if you just need to cool off, like I said...stand on the bridge.
When on the ride, there are strategies to staying less wet than others. Pick the front, the middle, or the back of the boat, but choose wisely and good luck!
Mine Of Lost Souls
Also known as the Haunted Mine, the Mine of Lost Souls, is a lengthy leisure ride through a haunted house. There are several different rooms to go through and it is dark the entire time.
The ride could be considered fairly scary to young children, however for teenagers, it is the perfect make-out spot! Without anyone around, and in the dark, a couple can smack lips for at least ten minutes uninterrupted. What a perfect ride!
Of course, there are cameras all over the place, so hopefully the park won't care and just let you have your fun. Don't get carried away though!
Castaway Island
Castaway Island is Canobie Lake Park's largest recent addition. It is a full fledged water park boasting nine slides, and over 50 ways to get wet!
The waterpark was added after my prime time of visiting Canobie Lake, so my experience is limited. For the most part I have only observed the young ones enjoying the slides and some awesome fun in the sun.
The best part about Castaway Island is that it is included in the regular admission! There is no extra fee or separate ticket. Once you are inside of Canobie Lake Park, you are all set to enjoy each and every aspect it has to offer.
I hope you have enjoyed my quick tour of Canobie Lake Park for this weeks HubMob. I had fun remembering the cool rides that I used to know and love so well.
Canobie Lake Park offers a little something for everyone. It has classic carnival games, food, picnic areas, amazing rides, and it even offers corporate parties! There is even a special children's area with smaller and more appropriate rides for the young-ins.
Not only is this amusement park large and exciting, it is affordable and a perfect attraction for southern New England and the surrounding area! If you ever have the opportunity, head on over to Canobie Lake Park. You won't be disappointed!

Wow! That looks like a lot of fun!! Bet it's full in the summer! Great hub! I'll bet you don't get paid to advertise, do ya?
Princessa, yes the Yankee Cannonball is ancient! I have not done research to find the oldest one in the country, but perhaps I will. That would be interesting to know! Thanks for the comment.
Candie...no I don't get paid to advertise, but I shoud!
Wow! That was an unexpected ride down memory lane for me! I can't tell you the last time I thought about Canobie Lake, but my mother grew up in Manchester, NH and we would go to Rye Beach in the summers. Canobie Lake Park was the first large-scale amusement park I was exposed to as a kid. Good times! I do hope it retains at least some of its old fashioned flavor. MM
Mighty Mom- I grew up and lived about 5 mins from Manchester until about 8 months ago!
Rye beach is one of the nicer ones up the NH coast. I'm glad I could bring back some memories for you. I haven't been in a while, but I can't imagine that they lost some of their old fashioned charm!

Oldest roller coasters
Thanks Dan. I can always count on you for this kind of stuff!
Do they still have that mirror building - where you can look at the floor to cheat your way out ?
There is nothing more fun and borderline scarey than old wooden rollercoasters - they had a few out west I rode and they were amazing.
I haven't been in forever, it looks like they added some stuff... perhaps a trip is in order.

Thanks a bunch! = )
