Capitalism film

I had the opportunity of watching Michael Moore's new film, Capitalism, last week and I have to say, it was quite an eye opening experience.

There was a couple from Illinois who foreclosed on their property because they could not longer afford to keep their place; their monthly mortgage kept on getting larger.  They owned their property for more than 40 years and when the time came for them to move, it was quite an emotional scene.  The wife was crying and her husband was upset that the cops were forcing them out on the spot.

The mortage company gave the couple a check for $1,000 for giving up their keys and making the place  presentable for the new tenants.  Seems like a slap in the face right there.

Another scenario was when a man took out a life insurance policy and when he died, the company profitted about 5 million dollars from his death.  His wife was upset and beyond belief that the company would stoop so low.  When she learned that her husband was classified as a "Dead Peasant" under the insurance clause, she was insulted.  Rightfully so!

I was saddened to see the poor landscapes across America; the isolated warehouses, buildings, houses as a result of the crippling economy.   But I was happy to see people fighting against their evictions from their jobs and homes.  When people have lost all hope, others spoke out on their behalf. That is such a wonderful feeling.

This movie had left me with the notion that the United States is not a true democracy.  It seems that there is a Plutocracy, which the wealthest people control most of the resources in the country and the majority of people are underneath the wealthy.  As Moore had mentioned, many people put up with them system for hoping becoming one of them, but many do not succeed.

American people have a right to vote but there is so many things that are censored or covered up in this country.  People do not have a true freedom of speech because there have always been consequences for speaking up against individuals.

The Dixie Chicks have been criticized for speaking out against President Bush and their records sells have plummeted significantly and the 2000 Electorial Mess in Florida with the chads, or the voting paper fragments left behind by the voting machines.  As a result of the improperly punched voting cards, they were not counted towards votes.  Did this result in a voting scandal?  Many think that that was the case.

The movie, Capitalism by Michael Moore honed in on the greed of major corporations while many honest blue collar people were left in despair by foreclosures, job losses, poverty, and the crippling economy.  With the despair depicted in the movie, there are questions to be raised what the future holds.

President Obama has promised to turn this country around and to tackle each of the problems head on; starting with the economy.  Time will only tell, but my 2 cents is that this was a great and well depicted movie.  Well worth the $8!  Enjoy!

great hub. I did a portion of one my hubs about America and some of the problems which need to be addressed. I agree, something should be done.
