Crocheting is a satisfying hobby because you can create interesting items to decorate your home with.
I've always been fascinated with the complexity of crocheted designs--fragile birds and flowers and geometric designs crafted in crochet cotton.
When I crochet, I work with finer thread and smaller hooks to produce lace-like designs. I try to incorporate different elements so that each crocheted piece is unique.
Crocheted items can be either delicate or heavy depending on the hook size and the thickness of the crochet cotton
- Hooks: I use sizes .75 or 1.00

Crocheting Buying Tips
- If you plan on doing a number of crochet projects, you can save money by buying your cotton in lots. You can stock up on cotton for a fraction of the price. For example, notice the 30 balls for $20.00 in the E-bay ad. This is an excellent deal because 1 ball can run you $2.00-4.00, depending on where you live.
- Garage sales can also be a great place find cotton for projects.

Hints for Great Crochet Results
Your crocheted pieces are, in some cases, only as good as your patterns. If you are trying to create a crocheted item using hard-to-understand-and-follow directions, it can become frustrating, to say the least.
A beginner needs crochet lessons or crochet instructions that are clear and easy to understand.
I usually stick with Magic Crochet magazine. this is my favorite crocheting magazine because in addition to clear instructions, they always provide a picture-type graph, which allows for two methods of creation:
1) You simply crochet following the picture, if you dislike trying to follow written instructions
2) If you are unsure on how to execute a line of crocheting, having a picture with stitch symbols can be helpful.
As you complete your rounds or rows, you can mark these on the picture graph, which makes keeping track of where you are in your pattern much easier, over just executing written instructions.
Magic Crochet also offers pictures with step-by-step photos of how to actually execute your crochet stitches. For example, say the crochet pattern calls for a treble crochet and you need to refresh your memory on how to make it, you simply turn to the back of the magazine for easy crochet instructions with pictures, so you know you are on track.
- E-bay is a godsend if you are trying to locate issues of Magic Crochet.
- You can buy a number of magazines, with attractive patterns, for a reasonable amount.

How to Get Started With Crocheting
Crocheting is relatively simple to learn--especially if you have good books that include instructions accompanied by graphs or pictures, illustrating the stitches and rounds you need to complete.
- You can start with beginner crochet designs and then move up to intermediate and advanced.
- I like crochet magazine subscriptions because there are always new designs to try out.
- Crocheted runners and curtains take more time but the rewards are well worth the effort.
- I've also ordered back issues of crochet magazines, which helps when looking for a specific design and is easy on the budget.
- Another resource for crocheting magazines is yard sales. Sometimes crochet magazines are offered for mere pennies.
- Crochet magazines can also be ordered for a certain theme, such as for Christmas decorations. Beautiful and unique crocheted decorations, such as lacy bells, snowflakes or angels can be made very quickly.
- Crocheted flowers in a vase can make an eye-catching decoration for the home
- Leisure Arts also offers some good designs, as seen in the curtains.

Agreed, Zsuzsy - the table runner above is so pretty. I used to use these when I was a kid, but no more - alas - the cats would shred them all.
Hi Zsuzsy,
Although I have made doilies, the runners and hangings are my preference. I like the way runners look on antiques. I'm fortunate to live in a Victorian home, so these fit nicely.
I got the idea for the curtains when I visited a friend. She had made gorgeous pale peach toppers for all her windows and they were incredibly beautiful. I was so impressed and they looked so different.
Hi Kat,
Thank you for your compliments. Yes, that particular centerpiece was a more difficult project--but, hey, that's what makes them interesting!
Great ideas, I would not have thought of some of these
I have a couple of crochet ideas for finding patterns if you would care to have a look
Hi Eileen,
Yes, I saw your Hub and read through it.
I've always thought of crocheted beautiful items as tablecloths, though I sometimes see them hung over windows. The images you showed here render the windows rather differently, imbuing them with character. Good info you have here. I'm into home improvement myself, which is why I found your hub.
I love that crochet table runner photo you have at the top. Do you have the pattern and is it available? Thanks!
Hi, I've gotten a couple of emails about it so I will hunt up the magazine, the issue it was in and the pattern number. You should be able to contact the magazine and order a back issue at low cost.
The pattern was for intermediate crocheters and I had to complete one part and then the other.
Thank you for your comments. I loved this one, too, and finally made it. It has a place of honor on my dining room table.
