Getting a Vehicle Prepared

Getting a vehicle ready to be shipped is a very important part of any moving project. It does not matter why you are going to ship your car, truck, or van, but it does matter how you get ready to ship it. There are a few things that you need to know, and a few things that you need to do in order to make your vehicle secure for transport.

Research

Finding a good car hauling company is just the start. There are many other things that you need to know about before you release your vehicle to the shipping company. Perhaps the most important thing to think about is insurance. You need to know if your vehicle is going to be covered while it is in transit. While some companies offer insurance with any transport that they do, it is probably not enough to cover the total loss of your vehicle should something go wrong. Thus, it is up to you to make sure that you carry enough coverage in case of a disaster.

It is also important to check out the record of the company that you are going to hire. There are always going to be unhappy customers along the way, but you can get a good idea if a company is upstanding or not by contacting the Better Business Bureau. They can tell you if there have been any complaints filed against any given company within a certain timeframe.

Clean it Out

It is vital to clean out any vehicle before the car haulers get to your home to pick it up. Most companies will not take responsibility for any personal effects that are in the vehicle when it is being shipped. Removing personal items can also decrease the weight of the vehicle. This is vital to you because the lower the weight, the less it will cost to ship the car. You can also remove extra seats or other attachments from the vehicle to further reduce the weight.

Inspections

Always get your car inspected before your scheduled pick up date. This is important so that you know what is already on the car and what is not. It also verifies that the vehicle is safe for shipping. The inspector will be looking for leaks or any other problems that might interfere with the transport of it and other vehicles. When complete, make sure to take photos of any dents or current damage to the car. This will help you if you need to file an insurance claim at a later date.

Remember, you are responsible for leaks, prior damage, and anything that you simply cannot prove occurred in transit. Doing research on the car haulers that you are considering will go a long way in saving you time, money, and a bit headache. Every hauler should be registered with the Department of Transportation, so start there. If a company is not registered, then simply skip them and move on.
