Car Insurance Ideas for college students
68For college students, there are some practical things students can do to reduce the price of their auto insurance. These tips are quite helpful for general population as well.
As a sudent you are probably low mileage: insurance companies have special plans for low-mileage drivers which are often cheaper. This means that you will need to pay less as you drive lesser. Low-mileage drivers will face lower risks of accidents as they don't drive too often or too far. Try to drive within short distance to reduce your vehicle mileage. As an alternative, you can consider taking public transports such as buses or carpooling with people traveling to the same destination as yours to maintain a low mileage.
Consider Deductible : Deductibles are the part of any claim that is not covered by the insurance provider, which means it is the portion that policy holders are responsible to pay in the event of any claims made. The higher the deductibles that you choose to pay, the lower the premiums that you need to pay. You can opt to get higher deductibles if you can afford to pay the portion.
Take Advantage of Discounts: Companies offer different types of discounts which have the potential of making the policy substantially cheaper. However, if information on discount is not available readily, one can get specific information about existing discounts from brokers/advisors or the company. Few of the most common areas which discounts are given are:
- Good Student
- Safety Features (Air bags, automatic seatbelts, etc.)
- Anti-Lock Brakes
- Anti-Theft Devices
- Multiple Vehicle
- Vehicle and Home (Having cars and homes on the same policy)
- Accident-Free (Good driver discount)
Use your parents' insurance-- maybe. If your parents are willing to keep you on their car insurance, this may save you quite a bit of money. However, this varies by situation, and sometimes it's cheaper to get your own insurance. Get some quotes from an insurance company and find out.
Don't drive without insurance - Sure, this could save you some money, but at what cost? Aside from the fact that you can lose your license and go into financial ruin if you get into a serious accident, you can wreck your credit history and say goodbye to cheap insurance for decades if you are caught driving uninsured. It's not worth the risk!
Compare multiple quotes: Since insurers are allowed to price their policies on the basis of their previous experience and loss and since companies do not have similar experience and loss, prices offered by them for a given proposal varies. For the same proposal, one company may offer lower price than the other whereas the third company may offer the lowest or the highest price. Therefore, there is always a good potential of saving by obtaining quotes from multiple insurers and comparing them. Through comparison, one can find raise their chances of finding a cheaper rate.
