Introduction

If you expect this hub to teach you a specific cart trick you have most likely arrived at the wrong place. On the other hand; if you want to understand the basics of most magic tricks you have are at the right place. Please understand I will only be explaining the basics; and provide video clips demonstrating what I am trying to explain. If you want to really master these tricks you will most likely be best of buying the DVD's I will recommend, and keep practicing what they teaches till you master each basic card sleights.

I hope this guide on card tricks revealed will help you getting started with learning some sleights of hands. But keep in mind; as with everything; you will need to practice a lot to master; so you should not go buying any of the recommended sources for learning without you being willing to spend the time learning it. Please have motivation to get started before getting into card tricks. As with anything you could spend 30 minutes 3-4 times a week till you gradually master more techniques and card tricks.

The art of surprising and entertaining friends and family with sleight of hand and magic can be very rewarding. You can also create your own romantic presentation, or learning the “floating rose” by Kevin James.

Let’s go on with the basics:

Cutting the deck

This is to rearrange a group (block) of cards. You can learn both to do legitimate cuts, and cuts that doesn't change the order of the deck at all.

The break

This is a very important move in card magic, you create a slight break which no one but you know about, and shuffle the card, while controlling it to the top or the bottom of the deck. It is basically a small separation, where the card you are manipulating is either on the top or in the bottom of the separation.

Controlling a card

Controlling the card to the bottom or top of the deck (You can control a card to be the 13th card from the top as well). You can also control several cards to the bottom of the card. The point is really for you to have control of the card, and put it exactly where you want it. I should maybe clarify this; but the card is controlled in the act of shuffling.

The step

This is also an important technique with card magic. It is very similar to the break, except the break is not separated with a finger as in the break, but a slight step only you know about. The step can be use to “change” the card, and surprise the spectators. This can be achieved by having a small break; controlling the card to the second card from the bottom, showing the spectators the lower card, creating a small step, and seemingly you put the bottom card to the top, while you in reality put the card you controlled to the top of the stack. It might surprise them to see that you changed the lower card they saw on the bottom to become they card they put into the deck.

Jogging

You will be card putting slightly out of the deck (again unnoticeable for any of the spectators). This, as in the break and step will allow you to control the card.

To force a card

This is the art of controlling where you (or the spectator) put the card. You are giving the spectators a feeling of putting a card randomly in the deck, while you in reality are manipulating their mind or choice to put the card exactly where you want it. You can for example manipulate them to put the card above or beneath club of five, when you search the deck for club of five you know where and what card they had in their hand.

Other times you can manipulate the spectators to choose exactly what card you want them to pick from the deck.

Mastering to force a card is sometimes difficult for beginners, as it might be obvious for the spectators what you will be doing. Performance and a understanding of psychology will help you do it successfully.

A example of forcing the card could be to separate the deck in black and red cards, first presenting them the 26 first card to select a card (not hard to fold the top 26 cards); next finding a performance forcing them to put the red card among the 26 lower (black) card.

Black and red is of course a bad example; a better example is putting odd cards to the top, and pair cards to the bottom.

The Lift

You lift two or more cards, but it seems you are only lifting one card.

Glimpse

This is kind of cheating, but you are using various methods to get a small look at the card, without any of the spectators knowing or understanding that in reality you have already seen what card they are looking at.

Resources for learning more

I would advice beginners to start off with Daryl's Card Revelations as he give a detailed explanation of everything I have talked; and will show you clearly how to use the techniques in card tricks as you learn them.

The Art of Card Manipulation is really cool tricks; but they are also hard to master; I would advise you to be patient and understand the basics with Daryl before you get too advanced. He clearly shows different ways of doing the above tricks, so you can choose which of the methods suiting you best. He also illustrates how to perform card tricks as he finish “training” you in a method.

I hope this small guide helped to understand some card tricks, and how to reveal them.
Most of all I hope it made you interested in learning more.
