When breathing has stopped and no pulse:

  1. Stretch the victim flat on his back on the ground.
  2. Kneel at his side and strike his breastbone sharply with your fist.
  3. This may start the heart beating.
  4. If it doesn’t, feet the victim’s chest to locate the lower tip of his breastbone.
  5. Put one finger of your left hand on the cartilage.
  6. Move the heel of the right hand (never use the palm) against the finger.
  7. Place the left hand on top of the right.
  8. With a quick firm thrust, push down.
  9. Use force to press the lower one third of the breastbone down 1 ½ inches – letting your back and body do the work, not the arms.
  10. Now lift your weight.
  11. Repeat this rhythmic compression one per second
  12. Press……..release…….press……release……
  13. If you are alone with the victim, stop after 15 compressions and give him 2 mouth-to-mouth.
  14. Continue this 15 to 2 rhythm until help arrives.
  15. If someone can assist you, let him kneel at the victim’s head and give him mouth-to-mouth respiration at the rate of 12 times a minute – 1 breath for every 5 compression.
  16. Continue complete CPR until the victim revives--- pupils constrict, his color improves, breathing begins and pulse returns.

  • A person can be kept alive this way at least an hour.
  • Remember to call a Doctor or ambulance even before beginning CPR!
  • CAUTION: Even when done correctly, CPR may cause cracked rib.  When done incorrectly, the tip of the breastbone or a broken rib can puncture the liver or a lung.  But in crisis, even if you are not trained, give CPR.  Without it, any one whose heart has stopped will die.
