Have Teaching Degree, Want Work!

Unfortunately, teachers are not immune to the economic downturn.  As people lose jobs, they often pack up and move to places with more job opportunities.  This can leave classrooms emptier than they've been for years, and causes school districts to downsize rather than hire, right when you are searching for work.

There are options out there!  Teachers don't have to be employed by the local school system.  Here are some out-of-the-box ideas to get you thinking in new directions.

Catalog Your Assets

As a teacher, chances are that you have some built-in strengths that could be real assets in your search for employment.  Make sure you are highlighting them on your resume.

Consider things like your ability to communicate, to write clear goals, to develop curriculum, and to motivate others.  Chances are very good that you have great research skills, organizational skills, and the ability to help others understand things.

Other Agencies, NonProfits, and Nooks and Crannies

NonProfit agencies, particularly those that work with children or have improving employablity as a part of their mission, might hire teachers to lead some programming.  Check with the Scouts, 4H, Junior Achievement, and the Y to see if they're hiring.  Try the Salvation Army, Goodwill, and other United Way agencies to see if they have need for teacher to help clients reach for their GEDs.

Don't Neglect Hidden Worlds

Our society is full of hidden areas that most people don't even begin to consider unless they or a loved one are directly impacted.  Some examples include the mental health system, the agencies that care for the developmentally disabled, hospitals, and the juvenile justice system.  In most communities, there are agencies and businesses that serve these populations and they offer education programs for adults and children.  Check them out!
