Who is a Caregiver?

The definition of the word "caregiver" depends on whom you ask. Physicians, social workers and related therapists may tell you one thing; this article is speaking towards the family caregiver. As the sandwich generation grows, family caregiving is becoming more prevalent ~ and may add additional stress and issues to our already-complicated lives. As "baby boomers" are aging and life expectancy is growing (currently at 81/77 yrs for white/black women and 76/70 yrs for white/black men), many adults, including tail-end boomers, are finding themselves taking care of aging parents in addition to their own children. The physical distance that may characterizes many families doesn't give them any reprieve from this stress: a friend of mine with 2 older children still at home finds it necessary to travel about 1,000 miles fairly regularly to help her own aging parents. Despite failing health, they continue to live in their home of 30+ years. Talk about stress!!

Watch Out for Warning Signs!

Caregivers face higher risks of depression, fatigue and physical illness. If you're finding yourself experiencing some of these signs, you may need help: - losing patience easily - difficulty sleeping - having appetite changes - unexplained bouts of despair, depression or crying - increased use of alcohol or drugs

Pat, Excellent Hub. I'm sure you strike a chord with many family caretakers.  My mother lived at home for over five years when she needed much looking after. It was an emotional roller coaster for the family, especially for my youngest sister who lived in the same town. Valuable information.

Pat,

This is a huge issue for many families. When you consider the physical exhaustion, emotional exhaustion and financial exhaustion - the impact can be overwhelming. I have walked that road. I wish I had known about Attraction Marketing years and years ago. Good hub.
