Naturally Curly Hair Tips
Many times people of biracial descent have extremely curly hair. It is essential that it is cared for properly due to the unique texture.
- First, make sure that the ends are well trimmed. This may sound like something we have all heard before, but it is very important because if there are split ends present, the only place they have to split is up the shaft. This is never good.
- Once split ends have been removed, there is a perfect base to start with. Washing more than 3-4 times a week is excessive due to the fact that curly hair can be prone to dryness.
- Wash and condition with a conditioner aimed at moisturizing or strengthening. Avoid harsh shampoos labeled "purifying". Although these are excellent for removing a significant amount of buildup, they strip hair of protecting oils and leave hair feeling like straw. They are overkill for regular use.
- Allow the conditioner to remain on the hair for at least 3 minutes.
- Pat the hair dry and always use a liquid or spray leave in conditioner to aid in moisture retention. Moist curls are happy, frizz-less curls. Good ones to try are Infusium 23 (moisture)ologie for the budget minded, and Nexxus® has a very nice one with a great scent called Humectress Luxe™.
- For added curl definition and hold a cream or gel will be necessary.
1.) Here are a few styling creams that I've found to work fantastically: Cantu® Shea Butter Leave in Conditioning Repair Cream is very reasonably priced at around 4 dollars for a 16 oz jar, and a little goes a long way for moisture and curl definition. I've also found the Curls™ haircare line to be outstanding. Their Curls™ Milkshake is awesome for softening curls and keeping ends from splitting. This product provides nice hold without the crunchy feeling. Apply these products while the hair is still damp.
2.) Some nice gels for curly hair include: The reasonably priced Aussie® Sun-Touched Shine gel. It slicks hair back perfectly and provides flexble hold for natural curls. Be sure to use this with the leave in moisturizers though as it does not have enough on its own to prevent hair from becoming overly dry. Another gel-"like" product is Curls™ Gel-les'c. Its more of a mix between a gel and a serum and it provides a very nice definition to curls without clumping them together in mass.
- For added repair and treatment, use olive oil! It can be applied to hair after shampooing and when used in small amounts on ends only, can be left in for a luxurious feel. For a hot oil treatment, simply apply a generous amount to shampooed hair, apply a shower cap, hang out for a few hours allowing body heat to warm the oil, or use a hair dryer for 15-30 minutes. Remove the cap and rinse and condition hair as normal.
Biracial hair is stunning with the proper care!
