Make Your Own Carpet Cleaning Products

Given the current economic conditions around the country as well as the uncertainty in the job market, many people are looking for ways to save money or make more money in their spare time. Many people are also interested in trying to be as environmentally conscious as possible in all ways of life. People are paying more attention to costs, the types of chemicals in their personal environment and have a desire to use more “Green” products wherever possible.

There are many companies producing “Green” cleaning products for everything from laundry detergent to dishwashing detergent to glass cleaners to floor cleaners and carpet cleaning solutions. All of the major carpet and floor cleaning machine manufacturers have a line of “green” cleaning products.

Rug Doctor’s line of “Green” cleaning products is called Eco-Green and includes a urine eliminator, spot and stain cleaner, and carpet cleaning fluid. Bissell’s line of “Green” cleaning products is called Oxy-Gen and includes the same products as Rug Doctor along with an additional allergen reducing product. Hoover’s line is called Second Nature and along with the same products as Rug Doctor and Bissell includes a hard floor cleaner.

Their cleaning machines also include Microban on the plastic surfaces to reduce the growth of bacteria when not in use. Woolite is another major manufacturer of carpet cleaning products with a variety of applications, but does not currently have any “Green” cleaning products on the market.

Purchasing carpet cleaning products is a relatively easy job, but it requires a great deal of research to determine which products will work for your particular cleaning situation. Determining what type of stain is involved and what type of surface needs to be cleaned will narrow the list of probable cleaners for you.

You need to know whether the stain is oil or water based, whether the fabric has been treated, or whether it is a hard floor (wood, laminate, vinyl or linoleum). Once you have this information in hand go to your local grocery or discount store and head to the cleaning products area.

You will notice that most of the “Green” products on the shelf command a premium carpet cleaning price in comparison to the standard offerings from any manufacturer. Seventh Generation has a complete line of “Green” cleaning products available in most retail stores, which offer natural solutions to harsh chemicals.

If being eco friendly is important and it is within your budget purchase the appropriate “green” product or products for your particular cleaning situation. Another consideration is using the matching cleaner for your particular model of cleaning machine.

Bissell cleaner for Bissell cleaners, Hoover for Hoover, etc. If your machine is still under warranty you may want to use those particular cleaners. If you want to be eco friendly but the higher prices are not in your budget, you can look into making your own carpet cleaning products.

One way to do this is to make your own carpet cleaning products from regular everyday household ingredients like ammonia, vinegar, baking soda and water. Here are a few recipes for making your own cleaning products from scratch.

The important thing to remember is that all of the various products that have specific applications were created by marketing people to get more of your hard earned money. I think you will find that you do not need so many different cleaners for your home.

Vinegar is an excellent cleaner that can destroy mold, mildew and is an excellent grease cutting fluid. The important thing is to use white vinegar that has no other coloring or flavoring so as not to leave an odor behind or stain.

White vinegar is a superb way to clean hard flooring surfaces like hard wood, vinyl or linoleum. Because all vinegars are acidic you should not use it on stone surfaces like marble as it will etch the surface over time.

Another great and inexpensive normal household product is baking soda. Baking soda is abrasive and can be used for odor removal and scouring hard surfaces. Baking soda has a high pH factor and it is this that helps to eliminate rather than mask odors by neutralizing the smell at the source. You can create your own soft scrub cleanser with a little liquid detergent.
