Cars and their Waste
66My car broke down!
Many car owners , see their cars as a means to an end, to get from A to B , but like so many others , my car is a part of me. I knew that there was a problem but just hoped it would go away, stupid I know, it just got worse.
All the 'mechanics' came out from behind closed doors and offered this advice and that advice, until the supposed cost had escalated way beyond my means. I decided to save a bit more before frightening myself and visiting a garage.
The 'Mechanic'
Time came and I had no choice but to take my car to the garage and have her checked out.
"When was she last serviced?"
I admitted, that I was a mere woman, and servicing the car when she was running seemed a waste of money..anyway..I couldn't afford to be without her, my job , you know.
"Umm," scratch of the head and a sharp intake of breath, " might have helped though!"
Well intentioned, 'mechanic'
With a costing in my head, and a lot of moaning, some kind hearted soul , offered to do the job for half the price. He would get a manual! "WHAT?" and have it fixed in no time, all I would have to buy would be the parts and a few drinks when he was done.
"How long will it take?"
another sharp intake of breath and "Dunno" I don't know about you , but I wasn't that impressed.
I wondered at this point how he was going to dispose of the waste parts, and he assured me that the dustman would take them if he hid them amongst other things. Not a good plan.
The Approved Garage
I returned to the garage, knowing that this really was the best way to go. Two days later and my car was returned to me in tip top condition.
I did enquire what they did with all the waste and the information that they gave , left me none other than impressed.
What happens to Car Waste
The environmental Agency Policy requires that the people producing the waste are responsible for the disposal of same, and in doing so, to be handled professionally and to prevent pollution.
OIL - the waste oil once it is treated, can be used as fuel in the manufacturing of steel and other high energy manufacturing plants.
PETROL & DIESEL - these are blended into derived fuels and can be used in cement kilns for the manufacture of cement.
BRAKE FLUID - can be and is blended into a product used for stripping paint from jigs in industrial manufacturing.
OIL FILTERS - are processed to extract the oil and separate the metal: oil = fuel, metal = re-used.
BATTERIES - are processed to extract the lead which is a valuable source of a scarce commodity.
TYRES - are not allowed in landfill sites and cause a problem. Some are retreaded and reused, but most are shredded and used for childrens play areas, equestrian centres etc
DEGREASING SOLVENTS - are continuously recovered and recycled for re use.
I have been aware for a long time that car waste could not be thrown out anywhere, but, it wasn't until I had this information that, I realized that, so much of it is utilized elsewhere within our global community.

Thanks Tom, was surprised myself, thought they just dumped it all.
Informative article, Hawkesdream. Different governmental agencies have been hounding the small repair shops for decades to get them to clean up their act.
It's about time they took notice, don't you think?
Am not sure if it costs for this recycling or how much, perhaps this prevents the smaller repair shops from conforming
Very good! Thanks Hawkes!
Good to see you Candie, btw how come you don't chat at vf?
Very good advice...hubby has the tendency to just turn the radio up so he doesn't hear anything. He does service the car which is a relief.
Great hub. Many plastic interior parts can be recycled into more plastic interior parts.
Hi GG, think most of us bury our heads, just to avoid possible expense lol
nicomp, thanks for dropping by, I forgot about the interior recycling, thanks for mentioning.
I am glad I have a ship, which reminds me it needs a service ; )
I'll board your ship, bc
Great advice here - so much can be recycled safely - we have car battery banks around here, but I don't know what the French garages do with all the gloopy waste.
I think that maybe the environmental policy covers all EU, so it must be disposed of in the correct manner.
Well, I think I've just learned another woman thing: not taking the car to the garage when it runs ok. lol I don't think it is anyway... I mean its no hobby of anyone to get their car serviced every month. :)
And money is an issue too. I hope you didn't have to pay a fortune. But gee, that other guy gave me the creeps... disposing of dangerous waste like that, is this kind of a practice of his I wonder...
I can't tell you how much I'm not into cars, though. So this kind of into is always new to me. I never would've thought they process the waste like this. I mean approved garages at least. My neighbour is a freelancing mechanic... I'm now wondering what he does to the parts.
Thanks fro the good hub, Alison! :)
Hi Haunty, always a pleasure...I knew the car was going to cost a lot, thats why I put it off, in the end I had no choice..[ Secret here,schh..£700 all told and then I got a good discount on the parts]..
Ask your neighbour, he could be in a whole heap of trouble if he isn't disposing thoughfully.
Cars are nothing but trouble, Happy Monday x
Thanks Cabin Girl, and a Happy Monday to you too.
I did not know of all this 'car waste' recycling. That's good info. Thanks!
Not many do frogy, I certainly didnt until recently. Thanks for hopping by.
We are getting better at some things, worse in others. nice informative hub dear.
Thanks Charlie, one step forward, two steps back, we'll get there in the end
for every car, there must be a bloke,
I don't have no bloke,
therefore I have no car. Well done, Hawkesdream, what is your dream?
No new hubs from dear hawkesdream so I'm condemned to comment on this one again.
Oh Katyzzz, oneday I will tell you my dream
Haunty, sorry you feel condemned, new hubs on the way, promise!!
Car problems are beyond me! LOL My brother insists I should go to a car service for maintenance...I am now remembering to do that. It serves its purpose! LOL
haha Ripple, and it saves you a lot of money in the long run, lol
Hi, I have run a 300 diesel estate mercedes for years , the car is 26 years old well over 200,000 miles , 36 MPG never goes wrong has very low emitions, thinks nothing of going through France and Spain and back fully loaded (7 people ) and heavy trailer. Oh yes and with no turbo does not get many speed tickets. The government say I should scrap it and have £2000 of a new one......NOooooo ! the emitions put out to scrap my car + emitions to produce new car out way many fold what I will put into the air in many years, all it will do is sell another car which is not even made in England pete
I would always recomend that one finds a mechanic who knows and likes ones type of car. Don't take a Renault to a guy who loves Ford ! even if he is a great mecanic. Rete
