Cash for Clunkers Bill
57The Clash for Clunkers bill is aimed at tightening fuel consumption standards. Eligible vehicles can receive a $4,500 voucher. New vehicles that are purchased would need to get 2 mpg more than the required mpg set by the House of Representatives. Some used and leased vehicles may be eligible as well. The hopes of this bill is to save about 2,745 more barrels of oil per day than the original bill and the government is hoping to reduce green house emissions by 1.91 million metric tons per year.
House of Congress approved the Cash for Clunkers bill on June 9, 2009. It was approved by 298 - 119 votes. This bill should help stimulate new car sales. It should also make for more fuel-efficient vehicles on the highways.
There is a website, cashforclunkers.org, which provides a central place to read about what is happening with the Cash for Clunkers legislation.
Personally, I think the Cash for Clunkers bill is a really good idea. It will help get older cars off the road. It will stimulate the suffering auto industry and reduce green house emissions. There are a lot of gas guzzling vehicles on the road these days and if this bill can reduce the number of those than that is a good thing.
UPDATE
June 18, 2009 - Yesterday the Cash for Clunkers bill passed through senate. This bill will give consumers a voucher for up to $4,500 if they trade their gas-guzzling cars in on newer, more efficient models. The bill is worth $106 billion dollars and it is hoped to provide a much needed stimulus to the failing auto industry.
