Kitten Behavior can be funny but also....

Kitten Behavior can be some of the most fun and entertaining things you'll ever experience. Watching kittens play and their spontaneous running and playing is better than watching TV.

When you bring a new kitten into your home and you have other cats it can create some confusion. Your older cat may not be too excited about having a new bundle of energy around that won't leave her alone. Although sometimes your older cat may become rejuvenated and more playful then you've seen in a long time. Watching any kitty get a burst of energy and romp through the house is blast. Especially when you get 2 or 3 of them chasing each other.

With proper training, many bad kitten behavior problems can be changed. Problems like jumping up on the kitchen table, sharpening claws on your new furniture, biting, chewing on extension cords etc. are all behaviours you can change once you understand how kittens think. It's much better to start any training while they are still a kitten. Like humans, old habits are harder to break. Of course, when they look at you with those cute, adorable eyes, you may just melt and give in to whatever they want. So much for changing behaviors! Huh!

Kittens are born with a natural hunting instinct. I have observed kittens hunting dandelions, raindrops, house flies, moths, and my own toes. Pretty much anything that moves is fair game.

Kittens love to migrate to the highest place in the room they can get to. We were looking for one of ours one time and eventually found her in plain site, laying on top of the jewelry box, which was on top of the dresser, which was the highest place in the room. Be sure to look around your home for the high places your cat may try to get too. Many kitty injuries come from them attempting to jump to a high place and not quite making it. We don't want our little buddy to get injured.

No matter how old your kitty is, they will spend alot of time napping. We joke around about our cats getting in their 22 hours a day of nap time each day. Often they'll nap in front of window or right in the middle of the floor where the sun in shining in. We enjoy when they decide to take a nap on our laps. Usually that means they expect a nice belly and neck rub too. Some of the positions you find them napping in are, "as cute as a kitten". A cozy cat bed makes a nice gift for them too enjoy their naps in also.

Because of certain behavior issues, some owners have chosen to have their pets declawed, though personally I would be concerned that a declawed cat has no natural defense against dogs and foxes, and a lessoned climbing ability. Take the time to learn about cat instincts and behaviors and how you can make your home more kitty friendly.

Kitten behavior can be unpredictable at times. By beginning training while their still a kitten will give you a big advantage in having a great experience with your new furry friend.

Having Cat Potty Training Problems?

Cats are clean creatures, and they have an instinctual desire to cover their waste that leads them to easily learn to use the litter box. Most owners don't have to do any work to get their cat to use the box - you put it out and they use it! So in most cases, a cat potty train system is not necessary. But what if your kitty is in that small percentage of household cats that doesn't seem to understand what they're supposed to do with their box? What if your cat prefers the living room carpet, under the table, or your bed?

The good news is that there are things you can do to train you cat to use the potty. First, did your use cat use it at one time and then suddenly just stopped. In that case you should take her to a veterinarian to see if there are any physical problems like a urinary tract infection. Once the pain is gone she may start using the litter box right away. If your kitty gets a clean bill of health for the veterinarian then think if there were any changes in your home recently. Have you bought anything new? Any new animals around? Often a simple fix can get her right back on track.

A few other possibilities, have you changed the location of where the litter box is now? Did you recently purchase a different style of box? What about the type of litter your using, has that changed? Changes like these can be a major deal for your cat.

You'll need to address your cat's stress or territorial issues, which this article doesn't cover. (Keep in mind that spaying and neutering can reduce the incidence of spraying.) If you're faced with a situation where your cat just doesn't understand what to do with the box, you can step in and help. First make sure that the box appeals to the cat. Cats need privacy security, and cleanliness. Put the litter box somewhere that feels safe to the cat, where he can see all around to make sure that he won't be surprised or scared while he's doing his business, but not in the middle of a room or lots of activity where he won't have the privacy that he needs.

While in the process of potty training your cat, make sure to clean it at least once a day, preferably more. Although sometimes it's best to leave some waste in it, to help your kitty know what they're supposed to do in there. You may have to try a few different litters until you find one that your cat likes. Once you do, stick with that kind.

Cats usually eliminate after they eat, play, and sleep, so feed your cat on a schedule. After your cat eats, spend some time playing near the litter box. Don't put him in the box, but you might want to scratch around in the litter to entice your cat to get in. Praise him for proper litter box use, but never punish him for mistakes. You'll only make him try to hide from you when he eliminates. Be patient, and your cat's natural instincts should kick in and he'll learn to use the box.
