thank you so much for your work! I am planning t change my 6 month old baby's diet completely to 10/10 food. I will be checking this website regularly to see any changes.

I have questions, when I adopted my cat at 3 month age - the sheltor lady recommended Wellness, so i bought orange cans of "Chicken" and green of "Sardine Shrimp and Crab"

he ate Chicken and refused Sardine completely, and it stinks alot too

then he wasn't eating as much Chicken, so i tried to switch, and bought Blue Spa select "tender turkey" - which he wasnt as happy about, then Science diet - same reaction, he ate but wth no appetite

then i got him Nature's Recipe "Julien Cut Tuna"- and oh my god he's run after me for it, and seemed to enjoy it alot

other food he enjoyed was Fancy Feast but i am not sure which kind, it was long time ago

so I am wondering, what's wrong with Wellness grain free Chicken that he stopped enjoying it? and why he didnt touch Wellness Sardine? is it his personal preference? age? or food is "too organic" and though tasteless?

Thank you again!

Aselya,

Interesting thing you mentioned about Wellness. Seems Menu Foods is the maker of Wellness Pet foods. I'd say your kitty was the wisest of all of us.

Susan

Aselya (Los Angeles, CA)  says:

i bought him 10/10 Fancy Feast 3 kinds

1) he loves and runs after Flaked Ocean Fish -it looks like chunks of fish

2) he likes Gourmet Chicken and Beef

i guess i will switch to that for now.

and also i think my cat doesnt like refrigirated food, he will eat with appetite when it's first opened, then once more after it was half day in fridge and that's it, he most likely will ignore it the next day, sometimes it helps to put tiny bit of hot tap water, then it brings out smell and flavour and he eats it, but forth time - nothing helps :-(

so for me tall cans are not an option, i guess they are good if you have 3 or more adult cats, to use it all at once, but if you have only 1 young cat - Fancy feast tiny cans seems to be best size.

he also cries less with his new food, cuz once he was refusing long refrigirated food he was also crying.

and why do you mention Menu Foods? is it bad?

AskSusanPeters profile image

AskSusanPeters  says:

Aselya,

Menu Foods was the first company to take responsibility for producing substandard pet food and kicked off the infamous pet food recall which began in March of 2007 and lasted for nearly a year.

Yes, Menu Foods is a bad thing.  Menu foods admitted to making poor quality pet foods and couldn't stand behind their labeling promises of healthy, quality pet products.

I found a canned food at my regional grocery store (Bi Lo) called PAWS. I would love a review of this in the ocean whitefish or other seafood variety...if you can find it. THANK YOU for all your work!

Jen,

I have not found an ingredient listing.  Did you purchase a can of this food?  If so, maybe you could help me to review the product.

What I have been able to find out so far is that Paws is a Menu foods item as was recalled during the famous Pet Food Recall of 2007.  Paws includes grains and in concentrated amounts or it would not have been recalled.  Paws is also a part of at least a couple of Class Actions due to pet illnesses and deaths.  Paws was (and may still be) selling products which the company claimed to be a healthy choice in pet foods when the pet food was substandard and not fit for human consumption.

I do have a label (but not here at work:) I'll list ingredients tomorrow. I do remember it had by-products, but I didn't see any corn/wheat/soy/gluten listed.

Am I correct in reading that while Wellness canned foods are made by Menu, their dry is not? I free feed Wellness dry, and offer raw and ?? canned 2 x day...I would like the best canned I can get for the best price (basically trying to even out the expensive dry and raw with a more moderately priced canned...) but obviously am not going to sacrifice health for money.

Once again, thank you!

Jen,

I don't have the answer for you on where Wellness wet or dry is made. That information changes with the different companies I speak with. Wellness isn't telling. So, I'm not real sure on where Wellness is made.

I feel good about raw but always be on the look out for corn, wheat, soy, brewers anything (beer run trash) by-products (floor sweepings), "meat" (recycled dogs and cats), animal digest (poop), natural flavor (more poop), BHT, BHA, (antifreeze), and animal fat (makes pets eat things they normally would not eat plus who knows where it came from).

Susan

jen  says:

I'm not going to bother listing the Paws ingredients. I don't want to support Menu, so I just won't buy it. :)

I make my own raw, so I know exactly what is in it and how it's proecessed and handled. It's easier than a lot of people think! :)

My cat was just diagnosed with IBD and I purchased the Green Pean and Duck food by Natural Balance, I do not see that on your list and would like to know the scoring for it, if you need the ingredients let me know, Also would like the scoring for the dogs food which is Purina One Healthy Weight Formula.

Thank you so much

Kelly,

If I did not know about the recalls of Natural Balance pet foods and the class action filed against the company for false advertising I would rate this product an 8 or 9/10. Recalls and Class actions takes another two points off so I would have to give Natural Balance a 6 or 7/10 at best. I have several requests for reviews (I'm way behind) in line ahead of you before I can give a full review.

Purina One Healthy Weight Formula 1/10. Very bad stuff!!!!!!!

Kimberly,

Brewer's dried yeast is something to be very careful about many pet food companies purchase the end of a beer/wine run and use the contents in pet foods. Look for rice, fermentation products, and barley in your pet foods to determine if the source is from a brewery or other maker. Brewer's dried yeast is supposed to aid in digestion. If you are feeding a quality product digestion should not be a problem.

Sorry for the slow reply I've been working on product reviews and have gotten very far behind.

Thank you so much for taking time to reply back, As for the dog food, will be changing the dogs to something better. Finding this site might put a few more years on my babies lives. You are doing a great job with what you do. As for the cat food, will try and find another limited ingredient food, that you have rated highly, I do not think there are many out there, so my choices are limited, But if you know of a highly rated food for my cat with IBD, would appreciate the feed back.

Keep up the good work, you are amazing!

Kelly,

Halo and Wellness are okay. You are so right about cat food being crummy but as far as the IBD - once you move to a better quality pet food (minus the toxic grains) the IBD will go away.

I'll keep you posted if I find other quality brands. Hopefully, we will be seeing better foods hit the market as people become aware of what really goes in the recipe.

Thanks,

Susan

Hi Susan, I am living in Dubai and the cat food choices we have here are extremely limited. One petshop has started importing a petfood called Natural Choice, which uses rice product instead of wheat, gluten and maize grits because it says they are well tolerated by cats. Is this true? Will you be doing a review on this product at all in the near future? They have all their ingredient lists available online on their website

I will be doing a full review of the Nutro Pet Foods in the near future. I can tell you that Nutro has a class action filed against the company for false advertising (advertising the product is a healthy choice for pet food) and has issued several recalls in the history of their pet food making. I would be very afraid of Nutro!

Hi Susan,

i was looking for the reviews of the Nature's Variety Instinct cat canned foods and couldn't seem to find them. Would it be possible if you could inform me where they are if they were reviewed and if not give your opinon about them? My cat has had yeast infection problems in her ears for as long as I've had her and the vet told me that it could be the diet. I've recently switched her to canned foods like Tiki cat, Nature's variety instinct, Nature's variety homestyle prarie and wellness (without grain) plus orijen dry after the innova false advertising class action I found on your website. Well, the vet informed me that the cause could possibly be an allergy to food because the meds are not working. He recommended Hills which I refuse to feed her but the pet store lady told me to go down to one kind canned food. We decided on nature's variety instinct canned duck. I just would like to know your opinon or review about this brand. Thanks for your help!

I was just skimming through glancing at some of the ingredients of both your canned and dry listings, particularly the higher rated foods. I noticed that many of those that had high ratings had things like the natural flavor, sodium selenite, salt, potatoes, brewer's rice, natural chicken flavor, and fish oils.

Are these ingredients included in low percentages in order to receive such a high rating?

I was also wondering if you could explain the difference between the natural flavor, and natural chicken flavor.

I am also curious as to why the fish oils are bad for our pets.

AskSusanPeters profile image

AskSusanPeters  says:

Kim,

You are right about a difference in score between my older reviews and my more recent reviews. I have 1500 reviews written to this site and others which I have been working on getting updated.

Fish Oil should be a healthy ingredient but the pet food companies are not using fish oil as a good item. Fish oil is being used by pet food companies to encourage pets to eat a product the pet would not normally eat. I make note of the fish oil when a product contains stuff a pet would refuse.

Great questions!

Would you still give those two Fancy feast cat foods a 10/10? I had been feeding Natural Balance Chicken & Liver Paté Formula Ultra Premium food until I read your review of it. I have others telling me that Sodium Selenite is a perfectly acceptable ingredient in low doses but I still didn't like how high up on the ingredient list salt was listed and the recalls and class actions. I have been told the recalls were on one certain flavor, venison. I've been urged to feed the Natural Balance which you gave a 7/10 instead of the Fancy feast that you gave a 10/10. I just want to feed them a good quality food. In your opinion which do you suggest feeding?

Kim,

Quick review before I get a chance to write a full review for Felidae Cat and Kitten Formula with Chicken, Turkey, Lamb and Ocean Fish

Alfalfa Meal - cat, not a horse. Used for fertilizer.

Potassium Chloride - used as the third of a three drug combination in judicial execution through lethal injection and used for making fertilizer.

Salt (table salt) - should not be in the diet.

Choline chloride is mass produced and is an important additive in feed especially for chicken where it accelerates growth. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Susan

Wellness chicken can formula looks pretty up to date. I feel good about the review as it is. I have not done the Pet Food Danger Gauge on the product but at a glance it would score pretty high except for the use of Potassium Chloride - used as the third of a three drug combination in judicial execution through lethal injection and used for making fertilizer.

Same with the turkey flavor canned Wellness.
Susan

ORIJEN CAT Food Acana - looks like your best bet so far.

Hi Susan,

Recently we discovered some odd behavior in one of my cats and some trouble keeping food down in the otther cat. I read your article and decided to give some new foods a try. I was using regular old Cat Chow and I have switched to Purina Naturals, (not much better) but was wanting to try something else as I've not seen much of a change. I see that you're located in Oklahoma. I live in the Oklahoma City Area and have so far been unable to find many of the top rated foods you recommend. Do you have any idea where I can find some of these here in OKC? Thanks so much!

Hello Neighbor!

Hmmm, most of what I have found to be worth a darn for cats is available only on line. Print this list and check your local feed stores and pet supply outlets. I'm not sure how to advise you since most of the food on the market is pretty deadly! We have trouble finding good food in the Muskogee, McAlester, and Tulsa areas, too.

Let me know if there is something you would like for me to take a look at.

I forgot to add some information. The vet wants my kitty on the Hill's Prescription Diet a/d to counter her weight loss. Each can has 180kcal (she eats about 1/2 can a day), and the ingredients in the a/d are as follows:Water, Pork Liver, Poultry Liver, Chicken, Corn Flour, Pork Protein Isolate, Fish Oil, Chicken Liver Flavor, Calcium Carbonate, Sodium Tripolyphosphate, Guar Gum, Potassium Chloride, Taurine, Choline Chloride, Vitamin E Supplement, Magnesium Oxide, Ascorbic Acid (source of Vitamin C), Zinc Oxide, Ferrous Sulfate, Thiamine Mononitrate, Beta Carotene, Manganous Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Niacin, Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Biotin, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite, Folic Acid.

Alice, Your vet is making sure to pad his/her bank account at your cat's expense.  The most likely cause of the tumor is grains in the cat food (your vet knows this) so your vet has now prescribed more killer food.  Shame on the pet food producers and your vet!

Quick review for your prescribed cat food  ....

Pet food recalls against Hill's.

Class actions filed against Hill's for pet deaths and false advertising.

Corn flour - causes a number of problems (including tumors) leading to early pet death and is simply a cheap filler used by pet food companies to reduce production costs.

Fish Oil - used to encourage your cat to eat ingredients she would normally not eat.

Chicken Liver Flavor - added ingredient which is not natural (causes cancer)

Potassium Chloride - used as the third of a three drug combination in judicial execution through lethal injection and used for making fertilizer.

Choline chloride is mass produced and is an important additive in feed especially for chicken where it accelerates growth. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Sodium selenite is mainly used in the manufacture of colorless glass - From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Susan,

Thank you for your quick response! I'll switch cat foods right away! Do you have any food suggestions for a sick/underweight kitty? I was thinking of switching her to Artemis or Halo, since you gave them such good reviews.

Also, do you know if Wysong brand cat food makes a complete, healthy diet for cats? Their "Vitality" flavor contains: Chicken, Chicken Liver, Water Sufficient for Processing, Ground Extruded Whole Soybeans, Carrots, Ground Corn, Ground Brown Rice, Whole Egg, Bone Meal, Dicalcium Phosphate, Taurine, DL-Methionine, Yeast Culture, Ground Flax Seeds, Dried Kelp, Dried Wheat Grass Powder, Dried Barley Grass Powder, Natural Extractives of Cloves, Sage, and Rosemary, Garlic, Black Pepper, Artichoke, Ascorbic Acid, Zinc Proteinate, Iron Proteinate, Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin Supplement, Manganese Proteinate, Calcium Pantothenate, Thiamine Mononitrate, Copper Proteinate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin A Acetate, Folic Acid, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement.

Their "Chicken in Stew" flavor contains: Chicken Broth, Chicken, Chicken Liver, Carrots, Animal Plasma, Natural Flavor, Peas, Tricalcium Phosphate, Guar Gum, Sodium Phosphate, Potassium Chloride, Barley Grass Powder, Wheat Grass Powder, Dried Kelp, Inulin, Sodium Carbonate, Iron Proteinate (A Source of Chelated Iron), Zinc Proteinate (A Source of Chelated Zinc), Vitamin E Supplement, Choline Chloride, Cobalt Proteinate (A Source of Chelated Cobalt), Thiamin Mononitrate, Copper Proteinate (A Source of Chelated Copper), Folic Acid, Manganese Proteinate (A Source of Chelated Manganese), Niacin, d-Calcium Panthothenate, Sodium Selenite, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Potassium Iodide, Biotin.

(Also, I thought it was unsafe to feed cats anything that contained garlic?) Thank you so much!

Tony,

Instinctive Choice looks pretty good. I found the Agropyron Repens Grass to be interesting since only the root (deep in the ground) is of benefit to dogs but says nothing of cats. Used to ease inflamed kidneys - wonder why they have included it in the pet food? Hmm. I don't like the use of Sodium Selenite and Choline Chloride. The rest looks pretty good to me.

Ailove,

No corn, wheat, or soy in a cat or dog's diet - It will kill them! Wysong has all three - RUN!

Garlic should not be fed to cats or dogs. My older reviews do not reflect my thoughts on garlic since I was trying to make a simple shopping list for people to use at the store. Now that pet food companies have gotten so sneaky with the pet food ingredients I have taken a stance against garlic.

Hi. Could you post the Newman's Organic canned scores? You do have the dry and it was rather high (8/10).

http://www.newmansownorganics.com/pet/products/ing

Also, what about Hi Tor Neo? It's for cats with kidney disease. Some of us have to watch out for phosphorous content and we can't be as picky when it comes to other ingredients.

CANS: The Hi-Tor Canned Neo Diet for Cats contains NO ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS. The Hi-Tor Neo Diet for cats has been specially formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for the adult life stages of Cats. Superior quality ingredients derived from animal sources and supplementation provides the cat with the recommended level of taurine. Ingredients: Sufficient Water For Processing, Meat By-Products, Chicken, Animal Liver, Beef, Poultry Fat, Ocean Fish, Rice Flour, Guar Gum, Potassium Chloride, Carrageenan, Potassium Citrate, Brewer’s Dried Yeast, Vitamins (Vitamin E, A, D3, B12 Supplements, Thiamine Mononitrate, Niacin, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin Supplement, Folic Acid, Biotin), Minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Copper Proteinate, Manganous Sulfate, Potassium Iodide, Sodium Selenite), Choline Chloride, Vegetable Oil, Taurine, Iron Oxide.

I'll do a Pet Food Danger Gauge Safe ranking on the Newman's for you.

Be patient with me, please.  I'm trying to get caught up with requests for writing my reviews.

Hello Susan,

I am having a very hard time convincing my family member that natural flavors are just another word for manure. Can you help me out by providing links or helpful information reguarding the subject of natural flavors? I love your web site!@

Thanks,

Kelly

AskSusanPeters profile image

AskSusanPeters  says:

Kelly,

Natural Flavors as defined by the FDA With respect to flavors, pet foods often contain "digests," which are materials treated with heat, enzymes and/or acids to form concentrated natural flavors. Only a small amount of a "chicken digest" is needed to produce a "Chicken Flavored Cat Food," even though no actual chicken is added to the food. Stocks or broths are also occasionally added. Whey is often used to add a milk flavor. Often labels will bear a claim of "no artificial flavors." Actually, artificial flavors are rarely used in pet foods. The major exception to that would be artificial smoke or bacon flavors, which are added to some treats. http://www.fda.gov/cvm/petlabel.htm

Animal digest. AAFCO doesn't care that manure is included in the pet food as long as the temperature at the time of cooking is brought to a certain degree.

Now there are those people out there who simply refuse to believe a pet food company would use manure in their pet's foods.  Let me ask you to think on this issue for just a minute and then see what you decide.  Let's take a person, for instance, When a person begins the "digestion" process food is placed in the mouth for chewing. Digestion continues as the food passes to the stomach and is broken down to pass into the intestines for further digestion.  Digestion is complete once the person has had a bowl movement and fully evacuated the food from the human body.  Why would obtaining animal digest be any different from human digest?

Thanks, Kelly!

Susan

Kelly  says:

Thanks so much for answering my question. My sister is totally convinced I am crazy and manure could never be added to cat foods. I will copy your reply and paste it into the email I am about to send to her. I agree, I don't think an animals digest could be any different than a humans. This was very helpful!

Can you also tell me if pet food companies or the ingredients are regulated?

Thanks so much, you have already helped me so much!

Kelly and Christina, my cat

AskSusanPeters profile image

AskSusanPeters  says:

Kelly and Kitty,

There is no regulatory body governing the pet food industry. AAFCO defines the ingredients but does not ensure or enforce any regulations. The pet food companies may do just about anything they wish as long as the material they use is heated to certain degrees and packaged safely.

THANK YOU for your amazing site and information. Have a question about California Natural (Natura). I noticed it was deleted from your safe foods list because of a class action suit for false advertising, but it is still rated as a 7/10 or 8/10 on the review page. Do you deduct points for questionable info on the ingredients? (eg, if they're being sued for alleged false advertising, how much confidence do you have in their ingredients lists?) I realize you can only get the ingredients from the company... just wondering if you have a "confidence score". Thanks again for all your wonderful work.

Deb, I like the way you think! I don't have a "cofidence score" but I have started using a rating system called "Pet Food Danger Gauge".

The 10 point review was set up as a "shopping list" type review but as the pet food companies became more and more sly about the ingredients they use to produce their brands of pet foods the "shopping list" review wasn't tough enough on the companies.

http://hubpages.com/hub/Pet-Food-Danger-Gauge-How-

I'll work on getting this product rated with the Pet Food Danger Gauge.

Susan - I do not see any ratings for IAMS cat foods; I am interested in the Veterinary Formula Intestinal Low-Residue. Our cat has had a chronic intestinal condition which after seeing 3 veterinarians, we still don't know for sure what the problem is. One of the vets mentioned IBD; another said possibly pancreatitis, and the third thought kidney problems. Any idea what canned food would be best for a cat with intestinal problems? One of the vets suggested the IAMS Low-Residue, but I don't know if it may be more of a problem than a help.

Sounds like all three of your vets are correct. Did any of the three tell you to be sure that your cat does not get any grains? NO CORN, WHEAT, or SOY. I'll try to get the review written for you tomorrow. I'm running pretty far behind with the review requests but I'll try to push yours to the front.

I really am quite lost with what to feed my little fur-babies, we are really limited for choice where i live (In Dubai we seem to have all the brands that scored reallly low!) It really does worry me what they are putting into their fluffy little bodies
