Getting cat urine out of your carpets and furniture is a tough job. But the smell that cats can leave is like no other, and can't easily be ignore, so here's a look at some ways to deal with it.

One thing to note, of course, is that the easiest way to get cat urine out of your things is to keep it from getting there in the first place. Cats naturally like to use their litter box, so be sure to keep it clean and available to them. You'll be glad you did.

Once you've got that cat urine smell in your carpets or furniture, you need to do a thorough job of getting it out, because once they've marked a territory like that, they will be more likely to do it again. So get after it immediately.


First, any solution will call for the obvious first step of blotting up any urine that is on the surface and still wet. Use old rags or paper towels, and use a firm dab or pressing motion, don't use a scrubbing action as that can tend to move it around even more.

WARNING - Some of these ideas may fade fabrics or carpets that are not color safe. Be sure to test for color fastness on a spot out of sight before you ruin your carpet or furniture.

One of the more difficult tasks is actually making sure you have found the whole spot and once you try to remove the urine to be sure that you treated the whole affected area. It turns out that a black light is very effective in helping do this, and many are sold for this exact purpose. Use it with the other lighting in the area turned off, and this will help you make sure you've done the whole job.

To be truly effective and not simply mask the odors, a cleaner will have enzymes that actually break down the urine to remove the odor.

Home Brew Urine Cleaning Solutions

There are a variety of ideas that have been popularized as ways to get cat urine out of your carpets and furniture. Here's a couple that are popular:

Mix three parts of water with one part of vinegar and saturate the spot. Dry the area by blotting again, and then sprinkle some baking soda in the area. Some times it's suggested that you follow this up with a mixture of diluted hydrogen peroxide and detergent, using a quarter cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide with a tsp of dish washing detergent, which you simply sprinkle over the area that still has the baking soda. Work it in with a small brush, and let dry. Afterwards remove it with the vacuum cleaner. Repeat as needed.

Commercial Urine Cleaning Products

One of the problems with almost any cleaning approach, including the home brew methods, is that the urine is not just a surface problem. We are used to cleaning things by simply spraying a cleaner on the surface to be cleaned, rubbing a little, and wiping it off. This generally won't work with urine problems because the urine has penetrated either into the pad and subfloor of the carpet, or the cushions and padding of furniture. This all has to neutralized, so you have to somehow get the cleaner as deep as the urine penetrated.

Probably the two most popular urine cleaning products are Urine Off and Anti Icky Poo, which admittedly is an odd name. Both have mostly positive reviews from the comments on Amazon, as with most of these things neither is 100%, but there are also some folks who are delighted with the results. Anti Icky Poo also comes in a starter kit that includes syringes to inject the cleaner into carpet padding or your furniture to get deep and get it all, if possible.
