So there you are, tired after a day at work and you come home only to have that acrid scent of cat urine invade your nostrils. Aaaargh!! Just what you need!

But. Do not despair. Having cat urine soak through your rug into the pad used to be a death sentence to your rug, not to mention your pocket book.

Lifting the rug, replacing the padding, cleaning and drying or even having to replace the rug is what can be in your future when not choosing the proper cleaning solutions.

Using regular carpet cleaners, or even steam cleaning the carpet is not enough to do a proper job. Steam cleaning may even make the problem worse.

Regular cleaning also does not get deep enough to clean the pad and underlying floor. Any urine left after cleaning will smell. Maybe not all the time, but when there is a damp day, there is that stink again...

Short of ripping the carpet up what do you do?

Today we have cleaners especially designed to clean cat urine. And while there are many on the market, many of them only mask the smell.

An appropriate cleaner that will do the job, and do it right, will contain elements that actually consume the urine. Here's how it works...

When your cat has urinated on your mattress as an example, you can absolutely not use a cleaner that you have to rinse out. How do you rinse a mattress? You don't.

What is needed is a cleaner that you can apply to the mattress, or even inject the solution into the mattress and let it do it's job. No rinsing or scrubbing.

Once you have added enough of the cleaner and it has "consumed" all traces of urine you are left with a clean sweet smelling mattress. The same applies to when cat urine has soaked through your rug and into the pad. The appropriate cleaner is injected into the padding where it will do it's job. No rinsing, no lifting the carpet, no spending a lot of money. All that is left is a clean carfpet with no trace of cat urine. So.... ditch that homemade recipe.

It may be inexpensive but will simply not be enough to do the job.
